Late heating for homecooking
The device takes long time to get heat and cook. The upper part is not powerful as lower part. So you need to flip the panini a lot to prevent from burning. I would not buy again

Flat Plates - A Convert
A prior unit by different maker quit, I chose flat plates over grooved. It was a great decision. Moreover, this unit is better made and appears to be of a greater quality than the units at the price point below this product. So far, the results have been tasty.

Make sure to correctly prime it
Nice press. I did run it outside for 30 mins at 350 to burn off wax, cleaned it, and seasoned it 2 times (400 degrees with oil for 25 mins). The sandwich turned out perfect. It is a cast iron so you have to take care of it after each use and it will last forever.

Pros and Cons of the "KRATOS" Grill
People in my family (and many friends) like Panini sandwiches. Thought I had better get a commercial grade unit. I submit my humble opinion on this particular press.Pros...1. Heavy duty - designed to be used all day long every day in a restaurant setting2. From order to delivery was pretty quick since it was dropped shipped by a company called Central Restaurant Products.3. Heavy duty cast iron plates retain heat well. You can make a sandwich then turn it off, and when someone else wants sandwich 30 minutes later, does not take long to come back to cooking temperature.Cons...1. QA at the factor needs a little work. the handle has a twisted appearance. It doesn't affect usage but it looks bad and when you pay a premium price, a little better QA at the mfg. level should be considered.2. Received an instruction manual, but didn't notice anything about first heat up. Apparently the factory coats the plates with some sort of wax to preclude rusting. After turning the unit on for the first time, it was smoking to high Heaven as it burned off the was coating.3. Nothing in the manual about seasoning the plates. The manual is pathetic at best and concentrates more on liability prevention than making sure new customers have a positive experience with their product.4. My first sandwich was a disaster. Even though I felt I oiled up the plates and heavily buttered the bread, the bread came right off the sandwich and stuck to both the bottom and top plates.5. Paragraph 7 "Cleaning and Maintenance" is severely lacking. I think the company could have done a much better job and expand this greatly. The mfg. warns that the faucet should not be aimed directly at the machine. Who in their right mind is putting this electrical appliance in the sink under a faucet?6. I don't think we need an electrical diagram of the machine (REF: Para 8.1)SUMMARY:While I'm not pleased with the product, I doubt it's worth the hassle to send it back and fight to obtain a "central return authorization number from Central Restaurant Products Company. I would recommend to everyone desiring to purchase a Panini sandwich press to seriously consider buying a non-stick, easy to clean unit. I think you'll be happier if you do.
