This is a long answer but I write it only so it might help someone that runs into the same situation I did with the fit of this thermocouple into an older Mt Vernon AE unit.

I have one of the older type Mt Vernon AE's and this thermocouple did not fit my stove correctly when using the existing slot in the "floor" that the original thermocouple was removed from.  Using the existing slot, the new probe did not extend into the firepot deep enough (maybe 1/8 - 1/4") and also, where the thermocouple runs below the floor above the ashpan, the wires that exit the probe seemed to bind against the brace that holds the rails that the fire pot floor slides on during autoclean.  If you have one of these type stoves, I hope my terminology makes sense.

Looking through Google, I found a message board article that mentioned "retrofit instructions" for the new type thermocouple but I couldn't locate these instructions online.  The message board article did mention drilling another hole closer to the firepot to route the new thermocouple.  I am not one to drill on expensive components without some type of instructions but I was in a desperate situation.  We had just lost power in freezing temps with a restore time of greater than 2 days and no supplemental heat at the time.  I felt I had no choice but to try and make this work.  Doing my best to eyeball a good location for the thermocouple, I drilled a hole between the existing slot and the firepot but closer to the firepot.  With this new hole, the new thermocouple will fit and extend into the firepot correctly but the "hold down" for the old thermocouple doesn't secure the probe as well as I wish it would.  This is probably my fault for not drilling an exact located hole according to the retrofit instructions.

However, my stove fired up and kept us warm off battery power until the power came back on so I consider it a success.  I still wish I could locate these "retrofit instructions" just to check my work.  As soon as the temps are a bit warmer, I will try to modify the holddown clamp to better hold the thermocouple in place.

All in all, I am pleased with the operation of the new thermocouple.  Once I figured out how to install it, it worked like a champ!
