Forges of Mars (Warhammer 40,000)

I was prepared for "meh" and got great.
Honestly, I'm not sure why I bought this book. I'm not into Adept Mech. I was about to be on the road for a few weeks and thought a trilogy would at least occupy my time. I was wrong. The books are well written and super enjoyable reads. So much so that I was disappointed when the third one ended at 2 am one night.Definitely worth your time.

Incredible trilogy
The books were incredible, detailing a fantastic story! If you enjoy Warhammer 40k you'll love the series. I cannot rate it high enough.

Fun and self contained 40K story
A good B sci-if movie vibe - a bit unevenly paced and a couple of weird story threads but overall a fun read. You also don’t have to understand a bunch of other storylines or have to follow up with other 40 books to get a satisfying conclusion (Cough Cough - Horus Heresy and Solar War).

My favorite book of 40k. A lot of twists and a very long and interestin story. I hope it continues

A great collection
Forges is a great collection of books, and this is a great way to pick up. The characters are well done, and very WH 40k.Galatea - how to describe Galatea without spoilers? I figured Galatea would be an Elder. Hah, oh not quite.Very well done. The short story that was tacked on didn't bring much for me.

Very Good Book.
It's got a little of everything from 40k. Space Marines, Titan Legions, Astra Militarum, Adeptus Mechanicus, xenos-scum, and more. It's not undiluted bolter-porn either.

WH40K Smorgasbord
Over the last couple years, the Warhammer 40,000 books have become my go-to series when I’m in the mood for escapist sci-fi. There’s very little complexity in characterization or plot, but it can be a nice violent grimdark read.*Heresy Alert* I’m not a big fan of loyalist space marines. Their character development pretty much begins and ends with [Role in their squad] + [“FOR THE EMPEROR!!!”], so I tend to gravitate toward books based on other character types. This particular omnibus was a lot of fun in that regard. As you you would expect from the title, the main story revolves around the tech priests of Mars. The three book arc (I wouldn’t recommend reading the books separately) follows an exploratory mission led by an arch-magos of the cult mechanicus. Along for the ride are a rogue trader and his crew, Cadian guardsmen, skitarii, titans, Black Templar space marines, and more. Weave in an eldar storyline and you get a lot of interesting interaction between groups that usually go their own way. This is definitely worth a read if you are into the WH40K universe and want to explore something other than space marines. I almost gave it 4 stars (an unprecedented rating from me for a WH40K book), but the author was so obviously fishing for a sequel with the way he ended the third book (and even more so in the follow-up novella) that I docked it half a star: 3.5 stars for competent escapist sci-fi that manages a bit more character development than usual.

A good not-just-Mechanicus Mechanicus story
I haven't finished the last book, yet. But so far it is a very intriguing story. I like the Mechanicus and having them to explore the vast space instead of just hunching in one of their forges is a nice new approach. Also the way the story is told is very interesting. It's not just the Mechanicus. It's also the Cadian Astra Militarum, a detachment of a Titan Legion, a Squad of Black Templar Space Marines, and a handful of Rougetraders. Such an unique group of protagonists.I really enjoy the book.

Great value
A very enjoyable read with some really interesting characters slightly grinding and predictable towards the end but overall thoroughly entertaining. Well worth the money hence the 5 stars.

A nice change of pace in the 40K universe.
I have been a fan of Graham's Warhammer 40K literature since I started reading his Uriel Ventris Ultramarine novels over a decade ago. If you are a fan of his other works I highly recommend you give this series a go. You can expect the same in depth character profiles and interaction paired with gripping story telling that makes you tell yourself "just 1 chapter more!". The Adeptus Mechanicus are rarely portrayed in story form so this makes for a nice change of pace to the usual perspective we see of the 40K universe. The 3 novels that make up this omnibus seamlessly follow on from each other so it is recommended to read the novels in their published order.
