Take good care not to add to much water, this stuff will get SOGGY!It was a lot more than I expected to get and its great, keeps humidity well and is awesome for my ball python. Filled his enclosure nicely with a little extra.I made the mistake of adding too much water and had to dry it out a little. Please make sure the water amount you put in is adequate for your reptile!

The price was great, so I figured I'd try some new substrate.It's not bad, but very stringy. I'd get it again in a pinch, but will be going back to my previous brand.

Almost killed my snake

I’m using this mulched coconut husk substrate in my toad’s terrarium. I mix it in with the finely ground substrate to create different textures for enrichment, aeration, and absorbency. I also use this coconut substrate for my house plants. I make multiple layers throughout the pot for root aeration in the soil. It works great for both uses. The only thing I want to point out about this substrate, especially when using with pets, is to check it thoroughly before putting it in a habitat. I found a stretchy piece of fabric in my substrate brick and that would have been unsafe for my toad. I knocked a star off for contamination.

So for all these years I have not yet tried this type of substrate and I wish I had. At first it is a dull compressed brick but once soaked turns into the beautiful substrate pictured. Do not be put off put by the compressed brick you receive. Once in water this stuff expands so much you wonder when it will stop. This will easily fill up an entire 55 gallon tank several inches thick. I have extra left over as my snake is very particular when it comes to only sleeping on shaved aspen but this is beautiful for the rest of her tank. Aside from being a beautiful red, this substrate retains a great deal of moisture which is great for shedding. Unlike other substrates, I do not have to constantly add water to keep up the moisture and humidity. This product sold me on Coconut substrate! I would absolutely recommend this product and I will be purchasing it in the future.

We have a hermit crab that we keep in a large aquarium with a mix of coconut substrate and Sand. This mix works great and provides enough for several changes.

I put these in my my rats' foraging bin and they went crazy for it! They love to dig around and nibble on the big pieces. These are dust free so they are safe for the rats' delicate respiratory systems. I didn't notice any long hairs either for their toes to get tangled with. You just have to watch for moisture as they will soak up a lot and get mildewy.The substrate came extremely compact and was quite difficult to break up. That does, however, make for easy storage if you don't use it all at once.
