How to be Danish: A Journey to the Cultural Heart of Denmark

Contemporary, informative and clear
An excellent introduction to modern day Denmark based on a series of interviews with contemporary Danes. "How to be Danish" is a fascinating insight into Danish culture and mores bringing the land of "The Killing" and "The Bridge" to life. Clearly written in a series of chapters exploring society and life in Copenhagen and beyond.

An insight into the current Danish ethos.
With Borgen mania fresh in our TV viewing memories this book provides an interesting insight into what makes the modern Denmark tick. Although the time limitations of the authors research mean that in-depth analysis was not possible Patrick Kinsley has managed to highlight some key elements in the social and economic evolution of modern Denmark. In some cases the roots go back to the middle of the 19th C but in others it is as recent as the 1973 oil crisis. A worthwhile read especially for those, like myself, with close family links to the country.

Good but lacking lietarature
This book gives you a quick insight on Denmark. And is very effective. I rate it 3 stars because it lacks, almost completely, an approach to danish literature, one of the key elements on any people.

A good summary of Denmark's people at this point in time
This is a good summary of what it is like to be Danish and living in Denmark now. As an Australian with Danish relatives it is also a comparison of them and us which makes sense of our different attitudes. Very helpful.

Easy reading and informative
I found this really easy to read, it's factual and you really get a feel for the way the Danish people are, better than the standard guide books!

How to be Danish seen from a Dane's viewpoint
As a Dane, I found it amusing in parts and self-obsessed in others. But it was a good attempt at characterising most Danes and some of Denmark

Libro excelente / Excellent book
I bought it because I plan to move to Denmark and so I wanted to be a little informed. It is very illustrative and it has pictures to help you understand things. Chapters are not written in a continuous so you can pick the one you feel like reading each time.

excellent 'lite' intro to Danish culture
For fans of Nordic Noir or any of the hot new Danish televisual dramas winning over audiences across the globe these days, Kingsley's commentary will prove intriguing and enlightening. I admire the fluid, engaging manner with which he introduces readers with no prior knowledge of Scandinavian politics and history to the origins and permutations of the welfare state as well as Danish design, food culture, and immigration policies. The style is straightforward and simplified, but never simplistic, appreciative but never idealizing. He has interviewed many interesting Danes and he allows their voices to be heard as well. I had to buy a used copy because it was out of stock (a shame), but it was well worth it.

Innovative thinking
This is a very interesting easy to read book about a country that isn't spoken of much in the part of the world I live in. It describes innovative ways of living the Danish have created and questions how long these innovations can succeed before they become unfeasible.
