Can a wind cord / chin strap be added without damaging the hat?

I bought a wind cord with my hat which I have rarely had the need to use my hat grips very well with the hat band, also the brim gives in wind rather than levering the hat off. But when I have used the cord I've threaded it through the eyelets successfully.
