Review of rockin' Bass Drum, Book 2
This book is the second of a two part series. Rockin' bass Drum, book one precedes this book. This book is sometimes overlooked by many of todays young drummers who play double bass and have never played a single bass kit. However, from a teachers perspective learning to play complex rhythmic patterns with the right foot only is essential to building a strong rhythmic vocabulary. Use of this book by both single bass players and double bass players will enable any drummer to do just that. Further, the exercise begins with playing simple eighth notes on the ride or high hat, moves on to triplets and ends with sixteenth notes. All of which leads to a richer sound pallete. The beggining drummer should go through the first book before using this book. The first book introduces the use of ghost notes and also introduces the use of snare hits on the one and the three as well as on the two and four. This book assumes that one is already capable of this. Further, this book does not rely on drum tab. The ability to sight read is a must when using this book. This book will help those teachers who become frustrated when trying to convince the double bass player that playing with the right leg alone will make their double bass playing more effective. The rhythms in this book are complex enough to satisfy even the most hard-core of double bass players. When playing polyrhythms, the double bass gives the drummer another tool to use and is an excellent skill to development, so I am not knocking it. This book can make the use of the double bass much more interesting.Even if one has been playing for a long time, this book can be quite useful. We all experience those "stale" perieds that can be difficult to slog through. Slapping a book like this up on the stand and sight reading something I have either never played before, or have not played for a long time, will pull me out of a rut more quickly. Further, sight reading excercises are good for all of us. If you don't use it, you lose it.
