Great Reel
By far my favorite baitcaster yet. I've had tons of baitcasters, even some at higher prices. This one blows them all out of the water!

Better cheaper reels
Reel is hard to dial in, I’m not the most experienced angler but I have had my share of baitcasters. Seems like the brakes are either on way to much or not enough leading to backlashes. It has a nice look but everything wasn’t as tight as I would have hoped. Feels pretty cheap in the hand. I’ve had much better luck with cheaper reels like the black max or some kastking reels. I would have to say I would not recommend it.

I'm glad I bought this reel
Caught my personal best catfish (10lb) while fishing for bass the other day and this reel handled it no problem. Casts great. Looks great. No issues whatsoever ever. Would reccomend

Defective/Repackaged?
I purchased this reel after my son had purchased and used the 13 Fishing F1 which he and I both enjoy. I opted for the R1 to buy as a gift since at the time, at least, it was about $20 less. When I received it, I was too embarrassed to give it as a gift as it looked to be a repackaged return shipped in a dented box with the reel itself covered in fingerprints. So, I kept it hoping it would perform as well, or almost as well, as the F1. Unfortunately, at least this particular one is not even close. I cast it a couple of times with great results- and while I didn't really NEED a new reel, I was thinking... why not?, this is smooth! On the third, or fourth cast- with the same motion and effort, the reel emitted a "screaming" sound and my bait fell a good 20 feet short of my previous several targets. I tried again..same result. I thought maybe I was trying to throw harder, so I backed off my next few casts, only to hear the same screaming sound and watching my bait land 15 feet in front of me. So, I began to tweak the brake and backlash settings. At first, backing off of these worked...voila! But after a few casts, the screaming came back- and no matter how I tried to cast the reel, it would immediately scream (brake) and force a short cast. I spent an hour messing with the brake and backlash settings- even setting the backlash setting to "zero" to no avail. I then went and grabbed my son's F1 to see if I was somehow doing something wrong (I have been throwing baitcast reels for over 40 years, but didn't want to assume that it wasn't me). I threw his for an hour without a flaw. Conclusion? Either the R1 sucks, and no one should buy it ever, OR, I did actually get a defective, repackaged reel, which was my original suspicion. Either way, it is going back. It looks like the F1 and R1 price gap has narrowed, so go for the F1- it is AWESOME. But, consider buying it from a brick and mortar retailer to make sure you are getting a new reel, and not one that was repackaged and sold as "new".

Nice reel for the money
It's lightweight, compact and feels solid. In my very unscientific test, I compared the spool's ability to freewheel when spun by hand. It didn't freewheel as long as a comparably priced reel. That said, I rigged it with braid onto a 7' inshore rod and fished with it off my boat in 80' of water. It performed fine. I didn't cast much, mainly drop fishing. But it didn't backlash and operated smoothly. Worked like a champ.

Probably Wouldn't Buy This Reel
Inner piece of line spooler came out on a cast and reel is useless now. This is after MAYBE 60 casts on this thing. Got it on May 22 and it broke June 11.

Much cheaper feeling than the cheapest shimano. It bird nests every couple casts. I’d recommend spending a few more bucks for something else

I'm impressed with its overall performance, especially considering its price. The reel has a great feel in the hand, aesthetically pleasing and ergonomic. The smoothness of the reel is notable, making casting and retrieval an enjoyable experience. One of the highlights of this reel is its adjustment knobs. They are not only satisfying to use but also provide a good range of control, allowing for fine-tuning to suit different conditions. However, the drag system, while decent, does leave a bit to be desired. It's not a deal-breaker by any means, but for more experienced anglers or those looking for top-tier performance, it might be a slight letdown. But again, for its price point, the drag system is more than acceptable and functions well enough for most fishing scenarios. I've paired this reel with a Fenwick Eagle Medium Heavy rod, and the combination has been fantastic. In conclusion, the Origin R1 is a solid choice for anglers looking for a good balance of quality and affordability. While it may not be the absolute best in the market, it certainly offers great value and performance that can satisfy most fishing enthusiasts. Definitely a worthy addition to any angler's collection.
