MY SANCTUARY CATS LOVE DR. ELSEY'S WET CANNED FOOD
I am a non profit animal rescue in CA with a small cat sanctuary. I hold diplomas in Holistic Animal Health, Holistic Animal Nutrition, and completing Doctor Of Animal Naturopathy degree. I run my own free web with over 240 topics on animal health, nutrition and more. With schedule so full, I really do not have time for any reviews, but felt the need to write review about Dr. Elsey’s wet canned food for cats. Nobody asked me nor paid me to write this review. My sanctuary animals have been eating a mix of Nulo kibble and a high end variety of wet food. One had been diagnosed with pancreatitis & diabetes in 2020, and at that time I took all cats off of kibble. We continued with wet food and home made food.In September of 2020 we switched out wet food to Merrick brand after Merrick stopped making Whole Earth Farms which was also their label.Since dogs were on homemade diet since they were puppies (2010), I started feeding cats home made as well (end of 2019), which consisted of blend of chicken, chicken liver, chicken hearts and gizzards. In 2020 in addition to being fed home made food, I introduced raw ground turkey as well as chunks of beef to allow them to chew. Not all cats would eat raw turkey or beef, and some will only eat wet food.In September of 2023 my favorite of all cat was diagnosed with pancreatitis and some intestinal issue that a vet could not diagnose despite all the tests and several thousand dollars spent. I cared for JackieLina around the clock with supplements and kept her alive but her diarrhea and vomit never went away. I lost her in June of 2024 and this left a huge hole in my heart and soul. After her initial diagnosis, I started blending cooked chicken with wet food and significantly lowered feeding wet food to all cats.July 2024, another cat showed the same symptoms that Jackie had... pinkish vomit and bloody diarrhea. I rushed him to vet and got the same diagnosis for Solo as JackieLina. Intestinal infection and pancreatitis. I started her on holistic meds right away and her symptoms are under control. In August of 2024, I noticed several cats throwing up pink but could not confirm if they had diarrhea or bloody diarrhea. Then I noticed Petey threw up pink and immediately going to litter box and I confirmed he had bloody diarrhea. Someone on my rescue group posted about pet parents complaining about many high end foods causing bloody vomit and diarrhea... List was dated 2024 and Merrick was one of those brands listed to be causing sickness in animals. I immediately stopped Merrick and fed them just raw, home made and some sardines in water. Did not notice any vomit or bloody diarrhea aside from Petey.I panicked and spend next few days doing tremendous amount of research on raw feeding, that I can also lightly cook as well as searching for another can food brand for those who do not eat raw or homemade, so that I can blend it with chicken and feed them that way. Some brands were so highly priced that it was ridiculous. 12 cans, 10 oz size was over $70+. Researching on the web, I stumbled on Dr. Elsey's wet food. After reading ingredients, and approving the formula, I placed order not looking at the reviews. After realizing reviews were so low, I was not sure about this brand. Researched more and saw full blown reviews from a few different sources who gave this brand a really good review, I decided I would try to feed my cats this clean protein wet food.I was shocked by how my cats reacted... I never seen 4 cats eat at the same time from the same plate and clean the plate in matter of seconds. This Duck/Turkey formula was definitely a big hit with cats. The yellow Tabby looking at me is Petey, whose blood work came back normal, which confirmed that bloody vomit and diarrhea must have been caused by Merrick wet food quality suddenly going bad...I also decided to go back to Nulo turkey/chicken formula as well as duck/salmon and since I have issue with feeding cats fish due to possible high levels of mecury, I will add dulse flakes which have fishy smell to cats wet food and this will detox heavy metals.Moving forward I will also start feeding raw blends from Viva Raw Pets. With higher education on animal nutrition, I highly recommend Dr. Elsey’s brand of wet food. Those of you who complained that your cats will not eat. Here is why... most of cat food brands will add chemicals to attract cats to eat the food. This is very common practice especially with low end brands full of garbage ingredients. As for the gelatin on top of wet food... this happens with chicken and broth when left over night, it creates gelatin. So this is natural process. I did not notice any bad smelling cans from either Duck or chicken brand which my cats devoured. For those complaining that “2 cans in the case appear to be expired. They are swollen and one looks like the product has leaked out.” Please keep in mind that this is sold and shipped by Amazon, so it has been stored in Amazon warehouse. During last 3 years I would sometimes receive cans that busted open and product would be all over the other cans and sometimes they were maggots. NOT manufacturer’s fault. Many times I received cases of food with missing cans, etc. Again not manufacturers fault.Happy Tails to all. Hope my review will help someone make a right choice in feeding their cat(s).

Can't trust the manufacturer/shipping/subscription
I have canceled my subscribe & save order with this manufacturer/seller because they have repeatedly messed up the shipping, causing me to purchase emergency back ups for my cats. There are delivery dates for a reason. My cats love this brand, and I believe it's one of the healthiest, but I'm so upset about the unprofessionalism that im going to look for a different brand/seller.

Potus LOVES it
Our cat Potus, loves his new food. I did a taste test and put a tablespoon of this food next to a tablespoon of his other wet food. He devoured his Clean Protien food first and purred the entire time. He seemed very content and happy after his belly was full.

So disappointed.
I was excited to finally find a food that my cat absolutely loved. I didn't understand all the bad reviews at all.It was everything I'd been looking for for my kitty. She went completely nuts for it...until I got my second order. I'm not sure what happened. It is NOT the same, not even close, although I bought the exact same thing, flavor and everything. The first batch was very moist and creamy and even smelled good for wet cat food. This batch is completely the opposite. It's gritty, has the consistency of ground beef and smells terrible. My cat hates it! 😭 Since I bought this almost immediately after my first order, thinking she loved it, I'm past the return window. So disappointing. Back to my search for a good food that she likes, I guess.

Very good quality but $$$$!
This food seems to be very good and well made and is almost all protein from meat sources. That is refreshing. Someone who makes cat food that actually knows what carnivores eat (and it aint cranberries, peas or potatoes). The only thing that bugs me is the price. And this is where I go off...I can't get the idea behind these pet food companies suddenly realizing that cats need meat in order to thrive and live long healthy lives. But they also seem to think the ingredients in the food they make are worth more than a filet mignon and lobster tail dinner at the best restaurant in town.We have all known, for decades, that cats are obligate carnivores--that is, they can't digest plant proteins well, IF at all! Yet the tuna or beef (or whatever) they now put in the quality foods are either heated to the point where they have the nutritional value of a brick, or the company charges you more for light tuna (even if human grade) than the actual tuna you buy for yourself. I do cat rescue and feed a number of outdoor cats, and I've actually bought canned (human) tuna or chicken, instead of the cat food version that's 'flavored', because the human food IS CHEAPER! What happened? Did the cost of cat (and dog) food manufacture suddenly go up along with gasoline and everything else? I don't think so. I think it's just the pet food companies greedily jumping on the ole' bandwagon of raising their prices to match their competitors'. Or, it's all of them getting together (like the car compnaies used to) and 'price fixing'. Yeah, I might be a little paranoid, but the labels speak for themselves. See what pet food that's marked as "human grade" costs compared to a pound of actual chicken breasts, then tell me how paranoid I am. This whole business stinks (and the stink is all "human grade")!

Cat’s loved it.
The cat I bought this for turned his nose up at it. However, the rest of the pack (I have six cats) thought is was wonderful and gulp it down, than looked for more. Good quality cat food, my cats did not have any digestive problems eating this.
