I didn’t notice the smell too much the first day or two, but after a few very hot days the smell was HORRID. Imagine a bag of trash filled with week old rotting meat left in the sun. However, the trap was filling up fast and always swarming with flies. I left it up for about a week. At that time it was still attracting flies but was pretty full and I couldn’t deal with the smell anymore. It’s been about a month since I took it down and I’m happy to say that the flies haven’t come back! Of course, there are still some flies here and there. But nothing like before. I can leave my door open without worrying about more than one occasional fly coming into the house. I can walk into my backyard without having to swat away bugs. You could let it dry out all of the way. You don't really need to "clean it" after dumping out the dead flies - just add new attractant. A bonus is that birds start hanging around and swoop down to catch the flies before they even enter the container. They are reusable and the least expensive "trap" of this style. You can buy refills of the mix to make the smelly attractant. I clean them up and bring them in for the Winter and they last for years. I really like these - I have used them for years and they work really well! **Q: Does it works for mosquitoes?** A: I’m not sure, but I don’t think so. I’ve never seen any mosquitoes inside. **Q: Are you suppose to mix this up, it does not say on package and the stuff is just sitting at the bottom of trap?** A: I just drop the clear film with the fly attractant to the bottom of the jar and add water to the line. The film dissolves and mixes with the water. The idea is to not have to touch it, due to the smell. You could carefully swirl the jar around to speed the mixing along. I've used these for years and they are effective - very effective. **Q: How far away does the attractant work? Curious how close I must put it to where we sit.** A: Mine is about 100m away from where we sit and it works really well. My only complaint is sometimes I can smell the attractant if the wind is blowing towards us.
