The reason people are seeing 'External Use Only' is because mustard oil contains high levels of erucic acid, which exceed food safety limits set by the UK and EU. Labelling it for external use allows it to be sold legally as a massage or hair oil rather than a food product. Some of the studies suggested that high, prolonged intakes of EA may be linked with the increase in fat deposits in heart muscle, called myocardial lipidosis.
