The four preset buttons that can be programmed for other devices, can this be IR remotes or just WiFi connected remotes?

The remote can only be used for the WiiM devices. It doesn't use Wi-Fi to communicate with the WiiM devices. It uses the BLE protocol. You can use the remote to control the WiiM devices in about 10+ meters.
