Red Wing Heritage Men's Beckman Round 6" Boot

Hey folks, I'd thought I'd take a shot and give these things a review. To be candid, this is my first pair of genuine, high grade leather shoes, period. I had the unfortunate experience of being raised on payless shoes and what not.. Long story short, I've had foot issues over the past few years. Some of it related to diet and weight, some to the form of my foot, and some for the poor quality shoes that I have been so keen to come in contact with. I had always admired Red Wings, mostly because I would wander in to the Red Wing stores from time to time as a kid and marvel at the quality, and the price.. When I had the revelation that I should invest in foot wear, Red Wing was the first name that came to mind. I did some brief searching, read the reviews for this specific pair, liked the style, and ordered them. The following is what transpired: Upon first fit, they were tight, both in fit and trying to get the suckers on. It didn't bother me, I was too busy admiring the craftsmanship and quality. Once I laced them up properly, I felt something I had never felt before.. a boot that wraps around your foot, almost as if I had grown a second layer of thick, kick ass black skin. I will admit, after a couple days of pretty continuous use (10 hours at work and a bunch around the house) they still have the ability to make my foot sore. The good part is that, as the day progresses, the pain becomes less and less pronounced, until finally it stops towards the end of the day. The pain comes back upon next use, but again it disappears before long. I have no past experience with leather shoes, as I said before, so I can not comment on how they might compare, but I can say with confidence that these are the best pair of shoes/boots I have ever owned. So much so, that I purchased a pair of 1907's from Red Wing, and I love them almost equally as well! (The 1907's are for work, these bad boys are for when I want to dress to impress and rock it). Bottom line, these are highly recommended. I don't think anyone would be disappointed with these boots, provided there feet are fairly 'normal' and they can tolerate the initial pain. The unfortunate part to me, is that in order to get a good feeling boot, you need to go through pain. If my foot problems were present now, there would be no way to break these things in. Keep that in mind if you are looking for something to help resolve chronic foot problems. Otherwise, enjoy! PS, fellas, you'll be getting plenty of compliments ;)

It took me about 2 years to buy these boots. Usually, I look for boots in the $60-$100 range, and replace them about every 18 months. But every week or so, I'd check Amazon and other online sellers to see if the price of these apparently perfect boots would ever drop. It didn't. But my pop is a die-hard RedWing fan, having an impressive collection that includes some pair older than I am. "Do you like buying boots?" He asked. "No," I replied. "Then buy these, and don't ever have to buy any again." Now that I have them, I see what he means. It's night and day to any other pair I've ever owned. Sure, at first they were stiff, and there was a hotspot along the side of my foot after the second day of all-day wear, but two-weeks later, they fit perfectly and are as comfortable as a good sneaker. They look sharp and I get compliments constantly (I bought the "Cigar" color). They were true to size for me. I bought the same size I wear in Timbs, if that helps. I wear them in my busy office where I'm often on my feet, and also at home, where I work for hours as a carpenter. I've also worn them out about the town. Nasty New England ice hasn't proven a problem, and feet stay warm and dry during long, rainy city walks. In fact, I'd say that for long walking, these are the best things I've ever strapped to my feet; even better than my runners. I may not have much to offer folks who are considering these but already own a few other pair of pricey boots, except I can say that they're exquisitely crafted, comfortable, and as I said, look sharp as heck with jeans. To those who are unsure about spending this much, but are tired of the boot let-down or having to have four pairs of boots because the "do-alls" are always too expensive, I say go for it. The moment they're on your feet, the cost will make sense. Edit: I've now had these boots for a whole year, wearing the absolute heck out of them, and they look even better than the day I bought them. I oiled them with some pine-tar boot protector and they darkened at first, almost too much, and it broke my heart, but then they lightened back up. The age around the toebox adds awesome character and the more I wear these, the more people comment on them, and the more comfortable they get. Still my absolute favorite footwear.

No RW store had this shoes for me to try. So I spent hours and days reading reviews and finally bought this. So here are my 2 cents. 1) color: love the color. This is not burgandy or cheap looking redish color. It's like dark brown with hint of red. Beautiful color. If you ever get it scratched, you can apply RW burgandy shoe cream and it disappears. No worries there. 2) shape & style: classic with little bulge tip, but not goofy looking at all. Nice slender (some calls it long), but make it look very streamlined. Nothing bulky, simply elegant with ready to hit the dirt kind of attitude. 3) size: go half size smaller. Read almost all comments regarding the size, trust me... save yourself a trouble and go half size smaller. It is little narrow, but will stretch out. 4) break-in: Yes, it will be uncomfortable. I don't recommend putting mink oil. Yes, it will stretch out easier and make break-in period less painful, but mink oil is not recommended on this boots. Just toughen out for couple days. It will be worth it. 5) insole: no traditional cushion insole here. Just a leather bottom. Yes, it's hard, but will mold to your fit especially around your heel and ball area. Weird fact, I walked 7 hours after break-in. I didn't feel much of discomfort. In fact, it felt better than the ones with cushioned boots. Weird.... I thought about buying a insole but I will skip it until it is absolutely necessary. 6) durability: here are my cons. Sole is 3 ply leather and 1 ply rubber. This is my second pair of RW Beckman and they both show the split between the leather ply. Nothing serious, but it is still $340 boot. Leather is fantastic. It looks and feels better as it age, but still.. the leather sole splitting... Almost perfect...

I've always loved boots. When I was in high school, I remember wearing a beat up pair of old Wolverines until the soles literally disintegrated. But for a while, I got away from the lifestyle. But recently, my lifestyle and own personal sense of style seemed to demand a return to wearing functional footwear that also looked great. After some research on multiple websites, I determined that the consensus was that Red Wing was the best combination of price value and quality (although really, you can't go wrong with Wolverine or Chippewa either). Between these and the Iron Rangers, I chose to go with the Beckmans for a couple of reasons. 1) The soles on the Beckman aren't the super slick cork that the Iron Rangers use. Although it's only a half lugged sole, it gives you MUCH more grip than the Iron Ranger ever will. (Although if you must have the Iron Ranger, but want a better grip, check out the Oxblood version. Red Wing puts a lugged sole on only that color currently, for some reason) 2) Working in a smart-casual/business casual environment, the Beckmans were a better choice for me. Although you will NEVER get away with wearing these with a suit, they don't look out of place at all with a nice pair of chinos or khakis. Also, the leather is easy to polish up to a nice sheen, if desired. Upon unboxing these bad boys, there's one word that comes to mind: substantial. The leather is quality, and quite thick. The smell is like tanner's heaven. Picking them up, these are heavy for a pair of boots. These are built to last for a very, very long time. As far as fit goes, I agree with all the other reviews. Size down. IF YOU HAVE A WIDE FOOT: Do a half size down. That's what I did, and they're perfect. I'm usually a 12, and wear a 11.5 in these. IF YOU HAVE A NORMAL FOOT/WANT TO WEAR INSOLES: You should probably go a full size down. I personally don't mind the stiff insole the Beckmans, but I can imagine you'll need the extra room just to get them on if you're putting anything extra inside the boot. BREAKING THEM IN: This seems to vary widely from person to person. It took me a couple of days to get the full comfort level, and I never experienced the pain some people here describe. I started just by wearing them around the house for a couple of hours, and only the first time did my feet come away remotely sore. No blisters or other problems to report. Nowadays I can wear them all day without a second thought. They're not running shoes, obviously, but I have run for short distances in them with no issue. It's still slightly tricky getting them on and off, though. Plan ahead if you want to wear them to the airport. ARE THEY WORTH THE MONEY AND BREAK-IN? I'd say yes, absolutely. These are a darn fine pair of boots. If you want a pair of shoes you can buy, and then not worry about, then you've come to the right place. I recently hiked up a small mountain in Colorado wearing them, snow and all, and these Beckmans kept my feet warm, and my footing solid. Although I personally wouldn't wear these doing manual labor, that's more about the price point than the quality - they could certainly handle a hard day's work, I just don't want to mess up the beautiful leather so early in their lifespan if I can help it. So far, all they've needed is the occasional wiping off from dust. Simply put, these are the best boots I've ever owned.

It came down to the Wolverine 1000 mile, which is a very handsome boot, or the Beckmans. Formerly known as the Gentleman Traveler, the Red Wings are dressy enough to be very versatile. They handle smart casual very well with a tweed blazer and jeans/khakis. The quality exceeded my expectations. I agonized and spent quite a bit of time researching sizing and fit with this boot. The general consenus is that they run half a size large. I wear a 12d in EVERYTHING. Allen Edmonds, Cole Haan, Bass, Nike, all 12. My boot size would probably be a 11.5, but I wear thicker wool socks with boots for comfort and warmth, so all my boots are 12 as well. Doc Martens mostly for boots. There is a sizable group of folks that say to size down ONE full size. I went with my gut and sized down 1 size and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I wear thick LL Bean socks and they fit great. Most guys ordering a half size down would be good with that decision. But my understanding is they need to be slightly tight in the beginning as the thick leather will stretch and conform to your feet. I have ample room in the toe box and they are snug on the sides. Disclosure: these things are not going to be comfortable or something you wear 8hrs straight out of the box. Be smart and break them in a few hours at a time. They get better with wear and are worth the fortitude and determination to get broken in. Condition your leather, resole when needed and you will have a lifetime of enjoying a quality pair of boots made here in the good ol USA.

I don't wear these boots every day, but probably 4-5 days of the week. Not surpisingly, they're great boots. Very comfortable for this old school build. You can dress them up or dress them down, work in them or hang at the craft brewery drinking your IPA. Very little wear and they still look %85 new. They have your typical leather look after being broken in, but the structure, color, or construction is in no way compromised. They were the stiffest boots I've ever had when I bought them, and while they are still plenty stiff, they've softened up enough for my tastes. They will keep their shape, they will keep their color, and if you take care of them properly ( I use the red wing kit and obenauf's) they will stay supple and last. My only dislikes are this: they scratch and scuff quite easily. Even from a little bump. Which is odd, considering their stiffness. 9/10 times the scuff/scratch will come out with boot cream, mink oil, etc. Not a dislike but something to be aware of, you will want some thin & soft insoles to go with these boots. Both for fit and comfort, they are designed for this. They are extremely comfortable, but they are still hard rubber and leather soles. So these aren't the boots I wear on multi day backpacking trips, though I'm confident they would hold up. Red Wings make amazing boots, right here in the the U S of A.

This is my second pair of welted boots, my first pair being some black Frye Arkansas Mid Lace. These are larger in both size and bulk. These things are substantial. I've had them for 6 months now and while I'm wearing them very sparingly they're still breaking in. They're still quite stiff compared to the Frye Arkansas where break-in took about a week. I wear a max of 3 times a week and they're just starting to form to my feet. The natural leather insole isn't too comfortable and the toe box is huge. I got a thick set of insoles to out on top of the leather ones and my feet fit inside much better now. I'm a size 12 in almost every tennis shoe and I got these in a 11 1/2, I would like to see what an 11 feels like but I came across a deal around Christmas and I couldn't pass it up. Some things I wasn't expecting. It's hard to drive in these, they're gigantic and I can't drive my stick shift vehicle with them. They are not for work, these are for fashion. The leather is quite easily scratched and gouged. I was disappointed at first when I kicked a stick walking through my front yard and left a hefty scratch on the toe box. Overall I'm pleased with my purchase as these boots look amazing with all my jeans and casual pants, every color but black.

These boots are awesome. If you want high quality American-made products, you have to pay for it. If you're used to buying imported boots at Walmart, then the price of these boots will seem outlandish, but you've got to consider what an investment a good pair of boots was back in the day, before you could walk into any big box store and buy something that looks like a boot for a few hours' wages. I have no doubt these boots will last 15 years before needing to be re-soled, then last another 15 years. The construction reminds me of a pair of Addison flight boots I was issued in Pensacola and then wore for over a decade, every day, as a Naval Aviator. As everyone says, these boots have to be broken in before you you can enjoy them. After three days, I'd say they're finally loosening up a bit. Having been home from work for four hours now, I'm still wearing them in my living room. They're not combat boots. They're just a really sturdy medium-height shoe, which probably won't keep your feet warm in the snow (with no insulation), but they'll at least keep your feet dry and you'll have traction walking around in typical northern slush. And in the absence of a lined insole, you can wear them year-round. I've gotten multiple compliments on these boots from people who never comment on such things (including my wife). I highly recommend going to a Redwing store and trying on these boots before you buy them on Amazon. I usually wear an 11D and I ended up buying a 10.5. UPDATE: They've broken in quite well. I can literally wear them all day long, and have worn them on numerous day trips around D.C. with extensive walking and have no issues. My only complaint is that the rough inside leather makes it difficult to get them on or off without unlacing them quite a bit. A smooth lining would have helped this, but then that's something which would probably wear out eventually, whereas with this design, the leather inside will never wear a hole through it. Hopefully it will smoothen after putting them on and off a few hundred times. 2nd update (2022): Still in great shape. It’s probably time to send them to Redwing to be resoled. Now the leather is so broken in, they feel like heavy socks.

These are a serious boot and are well made. Two things to be aware of: 1. Red wing boots are a very large fit, go down at least one half size and maybe a full size. I wear an 11 usually, and occasionally find some shoes too tight even at that size. But my size 10 red wings fit perfectly. 2. The breaking-in period is painful and prolonged. Keep this in mind particularly if you will be wearing these on a casual basis. I've owned mine many months now but generally can't wear them Monday to Friday. Mine still aren't fully broken in.

These are great - brutal breaking in period for the 1st few weeks though.

Le produit est conforme à son cahier des charges. La production back in USA tient ses promesses. Les finitions sont bonnes. Le look rustique montre la réalisation soignée et donne une impression de résistance. Un détail: les lacets cirés qui ne se délassent jamais sont agréables... Reste à voir leur durée de vie. Au bout de 4 mois d'utilisation intensive, la chaussure tient le coup sans perdre sa forme et son maintient. Je recommande vivement.
