![Exorcist, The: Theatrical & Extended Director's Cut (4K Ultra HD) [4K UHD]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/41Jc+fig6HL.jpg)

William Friedkin directs one of the most horrifying movies ever made. When a charming 12-year-old girl takes on the characteristics and voices of others, doctors say there is nothing they can do. As people begin to die, the girl's mother realizes her daughter has been possessed by the devil--and that her daughter's only possible hope lies with two priests and the ancient rite of demonic exorcism. Review: The Best Horror Movie of All Time!!! - This is one of the best horror movies ever made in my opinion. I love the exorcist so much. The story is so amazing about yes a horror movie but it’s also about a love of a mother and what she would do to save her daughter. Great movie. Review: Existential crisis of faith.... - Exhausting, terrifying and tragic. Its hard to review a film that means different things to different people. I did not see this film until my teenage years, but it was talked about with such horror and distaste from an older cousin who came home to an empty house after seeing it and and freaked out to the point of calling over her older brother until the parents returned. She always talked about the, HELP ME scene, head spin, crucifix and the blasphemy that nearly caused her to leave, but her friend didn't want to. One of the many big budget horror films that dots the 1970s horror landscape. Some of the images will never leave your mind. Regan's head spinning around, an illusion created by the demon, her forcing the crucifix into her vagina causing blood- this latter scene caused many audience members of the day to run screaming from the theater. How the ratings board didn't swarm all over it is a miracle unto itself. How it didn't get a rated X..... Its revolutionary, incredible filmmaking from every level. Director Fredkin was a maniac on set, shooting guns to get honest scared reactions, filming in a freezer to show theaters breath. Linda Blair, wearing only a thin nightshirt caught a cold several times and later said, to this day she hates being cold. The film has the fascinating distinction of holding the audience captive through a plot that causes a viewer to examine faith, fear and religion. No matter your religious affiliation or just a plan ole atheist- it will disturb ad challenge you and may even give you nightmares. That, combined with relatable characters and an afflicted child cause viewers to abandon sense all together because it just seems so real.....

Existential crisis of faith....
Exhausting, terrifying and tragic. Its hard to review a film that means different things to different people. Nice transfer of classic film though it has some issues.
William Friedkin’s “The Exorcist” broke rules and boundaries when it was released. It was one of the true early blockbuster event films of the 70’s with lines around the block in some cities. It also was condemned by the Catholic League of Decency which probably made it even more of a must see in 1973. Regan McNeill is a vivacious, smart little girl. The daughter of actress Chris McNeill, Regan begins acting oddly. There are also incidents in her room such as the bed spinning that, needless to say, alarms her mother. She turns to science and when, science fails her, she turns to the Church. Featuring a stellar cast including playwright/actor Jason Miller, the great Max Von Sydow, Linda Blair and Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn. Friedkin was at the top of his game coming off of “The French Connection” and author William Peter Blatty’s script (from his bestselling novel) feels real and lived in. William Friedkin’s classic horror film returns this time to 4K with. Strong looking transfer. Fans of the film that have seen previous reissues on DVD and Blu-ray may be a bit surprised as the color timing is a bit different for the film. That may divide some fans. As to what the original color timing and intend was? Without being able to see a color graded IP for comparison, there’s no telling what the intended color timing was or how this compares. Keep in mind most folks memories of this are far removed from the original theatrical prints. We also know that the late director loved to mess with the color timing of his films (“The French Connection” in its first incarnation in remastered form on blu-ray is an example of this). That said, even the blu-ray remastered version had a revised color timing for the blu-ray as well. Regardless, this classic film looks quite good with improved detail, density, depth and audio that sounds terrific. The Atmos remix is built from previous surround mixes. It sounds quite good. This version features both the original theatrical cut and the director’s cut (which is inferior IMHO). The theatrical cut has the two commentary tracks from the late writer William Peter Beatty and director Friedkin. The DC has a separate commentary by Friedkin. For some odd reason, Warner has elected not to put all the other extras on the original blu-ray on this disc. Instead, they are available only as a digital download. it’s an odd choice to be sure and hopefully not a trend. Friedkin’s film was groundbreaking at the time and it remains a powerful horror film because of how an ordinary girl is possessed. It’s a slow burn horror film but once it gets going, it’s disturbing as heck.

4k is great!
Definitely worth the double dip. One of the best 4k restoration discs available. The film of course is iconic and legendary. The sound design is the best part

Good, but not reference quality by any metric
I certainly can't say anything about this masterpiece that hasn't already been said countless times. It's one of the best horror films ever made and it'll haunt your nightmares with visions of pea soup and demonic statues with enormous erections for the rest of your days. So I'm left with the review of the disc's themselves. The good) You get three feature packed discs... always nice.. Even the most diehard fans will delight in the generous amount of behind the scene bonus material Yes both the theatrical release and the director's cut are included. Which one is better? Oh no I'm not going down that rabbit hole decide for yourself. (Hint: it's not the director's cut 😜) For such a monumental release, there are some issues that I'm surprised Warner Brothers let slip through the cracks of indifference. The bad) What keeps this from being a reference quality experience is many folded. The color timing is all over the place, one moment the subway lights are yellow, the next moment green. There's inexcusable banding causing the blacks that should be inky and deep are instead chunky and distracting. Sure most people probably couldn't care less, but for the amateur videophiles out there it's disappointing.
