Saved my files after an OS crash
My desktop computer recently decided to stop working. I was able to get it to boot up once in every three or four tries, but the system would then crash within five minutes. I had most of my files backed up to the cloud - except for over 200 movies I'd ripped from DVD in order to stream them on Plex. Recovering those files became critical. This external hard drive dock worked perfectly. My laptop quickly recognized the docked hard drive and read all the files I had feared were lost forever. It couldn't have been easier - truly plug-and-play. I didn't experience any loud noises mentioned in other reviews, and had no issues with my 2 TB drive. Heat was dissipated efficiently and the dock never got hot. This external dock is a lifesaver.

Great Docking Station — Fast, Simple, and Reliable
I’ve been using the ORICO Hard Drive Docking Station for a while now, and it’s been excellent. Setup was quick—just plug it in and go. It reads both 2.5” and 3.5” drives with no issues, and the USB-C connection gives solid, fast transfer speeds. The build quality feels sturdy, and it’s perfect for backing up files, cloning drives, or recovering data from old hard drives. No overheating, no random disconnects—just smooth performance every time. If you want an easy, dependable way to access SATA drives, this is a great choice. Definitely worth it!

My brave little toaster
I’ve taken to calling this thing my “drive toaster,” and honestly, it’s been a solid tool. I’ve only used it as a dual-bay HDD dock (haven’t tested the offline cloning yet), but it’s handled heavy lifting without breaking a sweat—over 30TB of data moved and not a single hiccup. Speeds were consistent, plug-and-play worked as expected, and it’s saved me a ton of time. Two gripes keep it from 5 stars: • The buzzer is absurdly loud. First time it went off, I thought the smoke alarm was yelling at me. I ended up cracking it open and hot-gluing the speaker just to get it down to a tolerable level. • The drive slots are a bit roomy, so 3.5” drives wiggle more than I’d like. I’ll probably shim them with some heat-resistant plastic to tighten things up. Overall though, it does its job well and is a cost-effective way to wrangle bare drives. Just be prepared to do a little DIY if you’re sensitive to noise or picky about fit.

Works great, plug-and-play
I bought this drive dock for one simple purpose: to securely erase the dozen or so old hard drives I had lying around. Mostly WD and Seagate drives from RAID enclosures. I just hook this dock to my Mac mini (the dock comes with an AC adapter that is needed), insert an old drive, then use a simple Terminal command (sudo diskutil secureErase 1 /dev/diskX for 1 pass for disk numbered X), to secure-erase the drive. A 2TB 5400RPM magnetic-platter drive takes about 5 hours for one pass. The only downside, for those looking to use this long-term, is the dock uses an uncommon USB B cable (aka printer USB cable) with A on the host end, instead of the now popular C-to-C interface. If you lose the cable that comes with the dock, you'll need to find or buy a new one.

New MacBook Pro from 2010 Mac Pro
My 2010 Mac Pro would not run the software I use because of the aging OS. So I purchased a new MacBook Pro. But migrating my users to the new MacBook Pro can be difficult from an old hard drive Mac. My first attempt was by WiFi, I cancelled. Huge mistake, was going to be around 2 days to finish. So I searched for a Thunderbolt/USB-C solution. This was reasonably priced. Pulled the Time Machine drive from the old Mac Pro and dropped into this. Worked like a charm. All users, applications and data transferred to my new MacBook Pro, just like it always does with Mac-to-Mac. Because I invested so much into my old Mac Pro, I turned it into a server. This is a no-brainer if you have an old Mac with removable hard drives moving to a new Mac with only thunderbolt ports. I haven't tried the cloning functions yet. Hint, set the switch in the back to 'PC' before turning it on. Leaving the switch to 'Clone' will not work if your just using this to connect a SATA drive.

worked fine for a few months then died
Model: DD18U3-US I bought this in June and it seemed to be decent quality at first. After a few months it started to crap out on me. I had a weird issue where this would stop working, then the rest of my entire USB subsystem stopped working. Through process of elimination and many frustrating reboots (where I could only access my computer via remote desktop), I pinpointed my failures to this enclosure. On my last attempt recently, this would show up for a second in windows then immediately disconnect. When connected to a linux pc, it just spits out device errors. I tried multiple drives that all work fine in another dock, tried different cables, multiple computers, etc. I just reached out to their support and will update this with a couple stars once I am able to get a replacement but I would still recommend a different dock since I imagine the replacement will suffer the same short term lifespan.

Docking station failure within 5 months
11/30/2025 - I was initially quite happy with this docking station, however it failed within 5 months... Purchased in June and it stopped working in November of same year. Not good. I tested the same drive in another dock by Sabrent and it worked fine. I also confirmed the usb cable and power supply were fine, so it was the ORICO hardware itself that failed. Looking at 1 star reviews, I'm not the only one this has happened to... 12/8/2025 - Updating my review from one star to three since ORICO reached out to me and offered a full refund. They also mentioned that the dock is covered by an 18 month warranty and that "You may contact us anytime through our customer service channels, and we will assist you fully." So I reached out to ORICO customer service and didn't hear anything back after the first two days. I reached out again and someone finally replied to me and asked for my Amazon order ID which I provided. They responded stating that they already provided a full refund and that they would look into the issue and work on improving product quality. They also stated "If everything is in order, we kindly request you help us with shopping experience". So the response from customer service is about what I expected although I was disappointed it took over a week and multiple attempts before customer support resolved my inquiry. Although I did get a refund I consider this purchase to be a net negative experience since it took a fair amount of my time to debug the issue, file a review, message back and forth on a refund, find a replacement dock from another vendor, etc. I plan to avoid ORICO products going forward.

Hold 2-20TB as described, fast 3.0 usb connection
The product says that it can hold two 20TB drives (3.5") at the same time, but I searched the reviews, and not a single review has confirmed for me that this drive could hold 20TB as it says (check my time of review for when this was bought). All reviews are just how fast it is, how easy it is to use, etc. At the time when I saw and bought the product, the biggest drives out there are 20-22TB (discounting the 100TB $10,000 ssds), so I guess I bought the biggest drive among the reviewers here; and for the life of me, I could not find the 22TB drive dock station sold anywhere on Amazon. I needed to test the drive I receive immediately after purchase, if it did not work I need to return it immediately without missing the return window. I could not wait for the dock station to come out/be invented and then buy it and then test the 22TB drives, so in fear of that, I stayed away from 22TB for now. I shopped around for the 20TB dock stations, and Sabrent had some terrible reviews for the mix-up in their 20TB only able to hold 4TB max; and other brands had only good reviews with a few did not hold up the 20TB bargain, either. Though currently few, given that most reviews are decent, I decided to give it a try, the chances are it should be good on its description, and if not, I can always return it immediately upon testing it against a 20TB. And as it turns out, it has no problem holding two 20TB drives (3.5") at the same time; as it says, it holds a max of 40TBs with both bays. Then the usb 3.0 speed test; make sure you connect the "ss" makred (super speed) port for 3.0. It does well with a quarter of a gigabyte/s speed at 3.0 and 40 mbyte/s at other ports. A brief idea for us average buyers of external drive dock stations, 250mb+/s here means you can download/transfer a video game of 1 gb size in a little less than 4 seconds, and 2 gb recorded video in a little under 8 seconds, and a 4 gb HD movie in 15 seconds. I have tested this speed with large recordings of 20-30 gb files. The current speed is more than enough for me. I currently can't test the UASP transmission protocol of 5 gbps (which is 2.5 times as fast I believe), but if anyone can test that speed, put a review here and it will be very helpful to all of us. At this speed, it can download/transfer a HD movie in 6 seconds instead of 15. This is just giving us an overall idea of the top speed; but our current speed of 250mbyte+/s is more than excellent for general purposes. And finally with its great price, it gets a 5 star rating.
