You follow a young child struggling with fears of the imagination that quickly become more, along side unusual parents that seem to be touched with a unpredictable darkness. That said, the fall short is the ending in my opinion. I don’t want to give anything a way, and by no means would I say not to watch it, because it’s a good film. I just feel that when you get to the ending it seems rushed and a bit forced to lead it to an opening path for a sequel or a franchise build. However if you are looking for a good horror film with a nice Halloween vibe, you know that spooky movie you watch on a fall afternoon when the sun is setting and popcorn aroma fills your home and things just vibe for a spooky fun night, then you will enjoy the little over an hour time spent. ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Fumbled at the finish line. *by V***R on Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2023* SPOILERS:As the movie starts you're met with what seems like an early reveal to the plot twist of the movie, however you're pleasantly surprised to see that it was actually a well spun red herring. Unfortunately the last 25 minutes or so of the movie seem to fall apart and undo what was otherwise a very nice setup.There are multiple plot devices that completely remove your suspension of disbelief. One glaring issue that stands out like a sore thumb is the substitute teacher's response to Peter's cries for help. The unsettling painting she sees Peter make in class with the word: "HELP" alone would have been enough for most people to contact the parents and have a meeting with the school. Instead she decides to go directly to their home to investigate any signs of abuse. A believable response to be sure but one that can't help but to make the audience question if there was a better way to handle a situation like that. Instead she gets chewed out by the principle for going to the student's house uninvited. Not wanting to upset the situation further she decides to write her phone number on one of Peter's tests and hand deliver it to their house, returning a second time.Her visit to the house only adds more reasons as to why she should go directly to the police. While there, she hears Peter banging within the walls and is met with a completely unhinged response from Peter's father. (He was locked up in the basement by his parents after they find out he's been talking to his sister through the walls. It's inferred that the parents killed a girl that went missing a few years back because she saw they had locked their daughter away. Another great showing of the red herring making the audience think the parents are the only malevolent force at work.) That alone, combined with the fact that that neighborhood was known to have had a child go missing a while back, AROUND THE SAME TIME OF YEAR, would have been more than enough to warrant a welfare check from the police.Eventually after being let out of the basement, Peter calls his teacher and begs her for help in the most blatant of terms. His mother catches him and he hangs up. The sub calls back and Peter's mother picks up the phone and insists everything is fine. Again, showing a total disregard to a direct cry for help and not contacting the police immediately. Instead, an entire day goes by and the teacher seemingly just moves on. The plot continues to unfold without her in the picture and it's revealed that Peter's sister has been the one who killed the girl, not the parents. On Halloween night, Peter poisons his parents with rat poison thinking they were going to kill him and his sister, which leads to his parent's deaths. Just before the mother succumbs to her injuries she tells Peter "don't let her out", setting up for the reveal that the sister has been a malevolent force this entire time. Peter lets her out and it's revealed that the sister is some sort of monstrosity.Right around the same time, the brothers of a bully who Peter pushed down the stairs earlier in the movie show up to get some payback, but are met by the demonic like creature that is Peter's sister. His sister kills all of them and leaves a trail of gore, blood, and wreckage throughout the house. Guess who finally decides to show up again? The substitute teacher. Alone. No cops. Not a single phone call. She decides to brave the house of possible child abusers alone and at night. Time and time again, just missing the opportunity to call the police at every turn.It only gets worse when she decides to actually enter the house after seeing the front door is open. She walks inside, seeing the wreckage and carnage. Literally walking past like three pools of blood on the ground, a pair of abandoned crutches, and broken furniture. Hey maybe a miracle happened right? She keeps walking into the torn apart house and sees what appears to be blood on the kitchen table, (the blood from Peter's father throwing up after ingesting the rat poison.), and for some reason FINALLY DECIDES YEP BETTER CALL THE COPS NOW. But oh no it's far too late for that, she's already inside the house. With her phone in hand, only seconds away from dialing 911, she just decides to stop because she sees the overgrown hair of Peter's sister drag on the floor and around a corner. She decides to follow it, still withholding dialing 911 and gets attacked by Peter's sister, dropping her phone in the process. This entire series of events alone was enough to pull you out of an otherwise well set up movie and leave you screaming at your screen "why haven't you just called the police yet?"The conclusion of the movie adds a bit of the same to this as well. After scrambling around the house trying to get away from the sister, Peter and the substitute finally manage to get to the front door. The teacher gets out and looks back to find Peter has been grabbed by the sister and dragged back into the house. She throws Peter into a pit in the basement and the teacher goes back inside to get him. At no point does she even look to see if her phone is where she dropped it before. Even though this thing killed like four people, surely she, with her fire poker, can rescue Peter. Why would she ever call the cops?She makes it down there and the last fight between her, Peter and the sister ensues. They manage to get her in the pit and lock the cage. This is where you think you'll get some sort of "the police come and solve the mystery of the long lost child. Peter escapes with trauma, but in one piece, thanks to the substitute teacher. We escaped with our lives but at what cost? Fade to black." Nope. The sister tries, one last time, to use her fake child like voice that she used through out the movie to manipulate Peter into letting her out. This obviously doesn't work considering, well, the bloodbath she left upstairs and Peter says he's nothing like her. The sister then goes on to say: "Ohhh but do you really think this cage can hold me? What if you forget to lock the door? You'll always be wondering if tonight's the night I get out. I'll always be with you Peter." And we proceed to see a "what if?" montage of Peter in the house wondering if he forgot to lock the cage. Did he just see some hair on the floor? Oh man, spooky stuff. The wiki of the movie (yes I had actually had to look at the wiki of the movie for this information) states that the substitute teacher adopts Peter and the montage sequence we see is actually in her house, not his old house. Do police just not exist in this world? Are we supposed to believe that she's just going to be left in that cage until she escapes and comes to find Peter? The police aren't going to come and take his sister away, but even if they do she'll just get out or not be put to death? I get it's meant to be symbolic that he'll always carry the fear and the scars with him, always afraid she'll somehow pop up again. But come on, that's how you end the movie? It quiet literally fades to black immediately after that. No sort of resolution in dealing with the aftermath, not even a hint of "where do we go from here?"The entire last 25-30 minutes or so of this film for these reasons just completely falls short of what the rest of the movie was building up to.
