Upgrade: An Immersive, Mind-Bending Thriller From The Author of Dark Matter

my 2nd Blake crouch and I’m growing quite fond
This book starts off a little slow and took me a couple of revisits to get fully into but once I did I couldn’t put it down. I really love the way crouch paces these thrillers. I also enjoy the nods to the sci-fi elements but that doesn’t become all encompassing. This story ultimately is about humanity and I really enjoyed his epilogue. As someone who is extremely empathetic and can feel sympathy for strangers. It opened my eyes to the fact that not everyone does and (considering what is happening in Gaza right now) is exactly what we need more than ever.If you like Blake crouch, this is another hit in my opinion. Some of the themes have been done before I.e the movie Lucy. Things like that. But regardless the story twists and turns and the canvas he paints of the scenery transports you right there with the characters. If it’s your first Blake crouch. Buckle up because it’s a great ride, I mean read.

Enjoyable but not my favourite book by this author
Upgrade was a slight downgrade from the other two Black Crouch books I've read, Dark Matter and Recursion. Not that it was a bad or unenjoyable book it was just a bit more of a gun fest than the first two.The first part of the book hooked me in, I loved the concept. I thought it was interesting, although we've seen similar storylines before of people messing with genetics to create super humans, so it wasn't totally unique, but it was engaging. The second part of the book though, became a bit of a bibliography of guns and other destructive weapons, and it removed me from the action too much, so it was less engaging.Overall, it was a solid read but not my favourite by this author.

OK, but no Dark Recursion
Nice nods to the films, 'Upgrade' and 'Limitless'. Take it as a fun, mildly diverting cousin of his better stuff (namely, Dark Matter & Recursion). Also, not a great idea to write super-human-genius first person - asking for trouble.

Enjoyed
Immensely enjoyed. It made me want to read a lot more of Blake Crouch's books.

Good Read but nowhere near as good as Dark Matter and Recursion
I loved Dark Matter and Recursion and was so looking forward to reading Upgrade. It's still good but does not have the outstanding storyline of Dark Matter and Recursion. Also slightly over-the-top with the technical data - I like a bit of data but not this much. It was also very familiar to certain films that have been run on the subject - one in particular.I'm hoping his next book is a return to Dark Matter style which was phenomenal.

What if we could rebuild you...
This was my first Blake Crouch book, but I'm already exploring his back catalogue, as well as looking forward to his future titles. From the first pages, I was hooked. We follow the twists and turns of a futuristic adventure, a conspiracy and a potential world-breaking 'virus' that doesn't kill - it makes people smarter, stronger, optimised in every way. And their egos grow to match. It's fascinating to watch our hero go from regular human to super-human, maintaining his basic ethics while being unable to stop himself viewing those around him as inferior. Like it or not, his system is faster, cleverer, better - so (in the same manner as Superman, almost) he has to moderate himself in order to fit in. But it's not quite enough...I don't want to give too much away about the plot, but the writing here is absolutely stellar. Yes, this may have certain similarities to a recent movie of the same name, but it's absolutely it's own beast, and Blake Crouch explores alongside that road, treading new ground with relatable characters that gradually transform into something very different.I was engrossed by this book and don't hesitate to recommend it. I definitely look forward to a potential movie! This book was kindly provided to me as a Netgalley ARC, but the above opinions are entirely my own.

Fast paced and exciting story
A futuristic, action packed tale of genetic modification and the ethical issues that creates, plus a background of mass starvation caused when things have gone wrong.Enjoyable and a nice easy read.

High-Concept Well-Executed
Upgrade is an impressive novel for it’s ambition, scope and execution. Blake Crouch takes a high-concept premise – that other authors might have got bogged down with detailed exposition – and instead makes it gripping, keeping you hooked till the end. Also, there are not many writers who can sustain a first-person narrative for so many pages while keeping the prose fresh and involving – a difficulty I have experienced with my own writing.Highly recommended.

another great thriller
I find Mr. Crouch books extremely engaging and his extrapolation of future tech fascinating. How can a normal human write about a super-mind? Crouch manages it well. His future America is mostly believable, if we ignore some liberties such as Hyperloop service and stratospheric planes. The former was never a thing, the latter is not something I’d want to travel in.But it was easy to remove those things from the story and follow instead the evolution of a supermind forced to break biology but remaining essentially tied to human compassion. Most of all, it is a compelling read with some hard questions for us to ponder.

Dommage.

Fantastic Book to read
The storyline, plot, character-narration is awesome. Blake Crouch never disappoint us with his mesmerising climaxes. This book would be even better for biology nerds.
