Q: Is this the same bass at the harley benton pb-shorty?

No the pn shorty is short scale the Donner is long scale.

Q: Do I need an amplifier to go with this? Can anyone recommend one?

If your planning on starting or joining a band ,I would recommend an ampeg micro. Its has a built in d I and your can just use it for monitoring while in stage Or maybe a fender rumble 50. Until your playing w the whole band either one should work fine when you do have the entire band, run from the dI out into the sound board and like I said be for use it for stage monitoring

Hey there, we recently purchased this bass guitar for Christmas, and I don't know about an inclusive app, however I recommend Fender Tune. It's a red app in the app store, its one of the better ones we have used. It listens well and has the option for bass, electric, acoustic, violin, and ukulele. Not only is it the most epic of tuners but there's a song section (free) and you can open full access by getting Fender Play. But the free songs have tabs PLUS video instruction with a real person playing and speaking to you. Kinda cool! Hope it helps.
