This is an external sound card and does not rely on the internal laptop sound chip. You need to connect the unit to a USB socket on the laptop. Do not connect via a USB hub as this can cause stuttering. Once installed you need to ensure that this unit is selected as the default device for playback in Windows, and in the programme you use to playback audio/video disks or files. You also need to link the unit to an AV amplifier via the relevant mini jacks on the side. I use this unit to link my PC to an expensive AV amp and speakers using mini-jack to red and white phono leads and it sounds superb. It takes several leads for surround sound. I think you can also connect digitally to an AV amp via an optical connection but I have not done this. I can see the optical in and out sockets on the side of the unit. This may give better sound quality because then the surround sound is processed in the AV amplifier but it depends on your particular set up. You can also use it as a good quality headphone amplifier (in stereo). It is much better than the internal sound chip. (PS A very similar unit is now available in Maplins for £50 but I do not know if they are identical - they look very similar) Mine is a genuine Terratec Aureon from Germany and arrived in four days via Amazon).It is permanently connected to my PC and I have used it daily for years now. Thanks** A: I use the Terratec Aureon with Windows but the manual states it is compatible with mac operating systems as follows:MAC OS X (10.7.X / 10.8.X)With Windows it is necessary to download drivers but I don't think this is necessary for mac users. Input and output options are selected from within the software and I have never been able to select two at the same time. After attempting to use it again recently, the newest driver does not work with Windows 10 (tested on multiple devices), digital driver signature issues. The customer support is poor, no interest in the issue.
