I thought I'd give it one last try...
...before I taped on the return mailing label.I have been using a Magellan Maestro 4700 since 2009 and really liked it, but some of the features like deleting previous places no longer worked. so, even though the "GPS" still gets me where I need to go accurately it was time to upgrade. The problem a lot of reviewers have had.I could not get my Dell desktop. my Dell laptop or my HP laptop to recognize the Magellan 9612. I have Win 7 Professional on all of them.Everything was in the box ready to tape up when I wondered if by chance my 2011 Samsung N145Plus Win 7Starter netbook would recognize this GPS. Well, to my surprise it popped right up!Next I went to smartgpseco.com, but BE WARNED, this is NOT an HTTPS: sight and my internet security popped right up warning me.Since I have not adding any programs except AVG antivirus & antivirus removal, SuperAntiSpyware and CCleaner on to this netbook after a factory re-boot, I was not worried. But, I will NOT use smartgpseco.com on any other computer. The Map Updates loaded smoothly and in a timely manner. Now, the testing:First, I set the options for "Mostly Freeways" and turned OFF the "Driver Safety Alert" which freezes the Menu while the car is in motion. Then programed in a Walmart store 35 minutes from my home. Speed limits were accurate and to my surprise the "Red Light Warning" came on a block from the store. I programmed each stop I had that day, Fred Meyer, Starbucks, etc., the GPS worked like a charm. The Real test:With "mostly Freeways" still set, I programed from Lynnwood, WA the 55 mile drive home. But, I made many detours on city streets that took me to Highway 529 which eventually intersected with I-5 northbound to test the recalculating feature. The 9612T-LM spoke the correct turn instructions at each street that would take me back to I-5, and when I continued on, it recalculated within 1/2 a block. In a short time it just did the calculations as though the 9612 knew the route I was taking. So, after a few more weeks and a few road trips across the sound to towns I've never explored before, I will update if there are any problems. In 3 months (after the refurbished warranty time) I will either add a STAR or remove Stars according to the 9612T-LM's performance.

Shame on Me!
I should have read more and done more research before buying this.First LIFETIME UPDATES is a joke. Magellan plainly states in their documentation (that I didn't read!) that it is free for the lifetime of THE GPS unit, not you. And apparently they build such lousy stuff they say that is only THREE years! In order for the update site SmartGPS ECO to recognize your GPS you need a plug-in on your computer. Magellan states that this program will only run on Chrome or Firefox. Later I find that you can only run the plug-in on Chrome.Did all that, finally got it to recognize the GPS and update the maps. Played a bit with it around town today and it is just perfectly ordinary, but what the heck did I expect for sixty bucks. One other little thing, Magellen does not give you the option to change the VOICE.

user friendly- read the manual- simple and to the point.
Megellan, a good name with a good product. I sent back a GPS I previously purchased because it starts you off in Russia and You try and figure where you want to end up. Not going to bad mouth it, just wasnt for me. Bought the reconditioned 7 " 9612T-LM , Very friendly and have used it a couple of times. One thing that disappointed me on the previous GPS was the tiny written directions and it consisted mostly of trouble shooting questions. The instruction book is what you would expect from a first class company. It does say I cant return it; thats reasonable. However, It does have a guarantee same as a new one. I love the big screen. I have a small GPS and it works, just wanted to upgrade at a reasonable cost.

I'm not sure I'd buy another Magellan product after using this one - or should say TRYING TO USE this one.
Not sure I should have bought this product. When I'm driving, the map showing my location and the roads around me suddenly switches to some other view. Sometimes it's the overview page. Other times it shows me, in text, my location. This is very annoying since I've set it to show me the map view and I'm trying to use it for that purpose. When this condition occurs, it is VERY difficult to get back the view I set, and wanted.I bought this Magellan product because of the supposed reputation of the company. Not sure if I made a wise choice.

Cant access menu screen while driving.
The huge screen is nice. If I miss a turn, instead of recalculating the route, it will keep trying to get me to make a uturn, sometimes for 15-20 miles, even when I know there is another and better option. Other thing I strongly dislike is, after your going more than 10mph, you cant access the menu button. Sometimes I want to cancel the route while I'm driving, cant donit unless you stop. If I would've known this beforehand, wouldn't have bought it. Think this will be my last Magellan GPS, haven't been satisfied with the last 2 I've bought. Gave it 3 stars due to the large screen Size, otherwise I would've gave it 2 stars.

Beware - Received Defective Unit
I received my GPS unit today and was excited to enter hotel and landmark addresses ahead of a big road trip we have coming up in a week's time. I was able to do the map update from my PC, but when I went to test the unit I found that the touch screen does not allow me to type. When I press a button on the screen, the unit does nothing or activates an adjacent button. Essentially, I can't enter an address on the GPS unit, rendering it completely worthless.I'll be sending this back for a refund. Unfortunately, I'll have to pay out of pocket to ship back a defective product. This experience will be a waste if both time and money with nothing to show for it except unnecessary frustration. If you are thinking about ordering this factory refurbished unit, buyer beware! I'd consider a different option.

Happy with my purchase
I previously bought and returned two Garmins. Both were refurbished and both died as soon as I updated them. This Magellan is great! It does everything I need it to and has a nice big display. It is a refurbished model as well and worked instantly out of the box. I am very happy with it and wish I had purchased it first!

Failed to navigate using a postal code only
Had to return the item. Tried to navigate using a Canadian postal code only. The device kept asking the street name and couldn't start the job. Can not believe it's happening in 2018.

Measure First
This appeared to be a very good product, and we were looking forward to using it. We found, however, that 7" is a lot bigger than it sounds when you are trying to connect it to the window of a mid-sized SUV. It just created too many blind spots, so for safety we replaced it with a 5". There's a very surprising difference in those sizes when you check them out.
