Drama / Comedy 1994 by Woody Allen with John Cusack and Dianne Wiest. Gangster Comedy, Bullets over Broadway, exhibits unsurpassed humor and set in 1920s New York. One of Woody Allen’s best.
I love this film.I love Woody Allen films per se but I think my favourites are those that he doesn’t appear in. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy his performances, it’s just I think he’s a better director and gets more from his cast when he stays on one side of the camera. And Bullets is a brilliant ensemble piece. As usual Woody’s role (the role he would have played) is easily recognisable and John Cusack stays on the right side of impersonation in taking it on. Unlike Kenneth Branagh in Celebrity, say. Cusack is a leading actor who doesn’t get the credit he deserves. One could praise all the performances here but let me give a shout out for the brilliant Jim Broadbent. Wonderfully funny from start to finish. If you haven’t seen this film yet put it high on your watchlist. It’s a gem.

But it gets much better and was enjoyable
It's worth persevering with this film. The first 20 mins or so are annoyingly v. 'shouty' and we considered giving up on it. But it gets much better and was enjoyable

Almost not a high definition disc.
The qualiy of the image is poor. It is little best than a DVD.

excellent tongue in cheek portrait of stage artists
Excellent tongue in cheek portrait of stage artists, darling! With some very funny one-liners and some excellent intentionally ham performances and a bit of old fashioned gangster action thrown in for good measure!!

A OK Woody Allen film
Not the best Woody Allen film but still a style of its own

I like it
Excellent - one of Woody Allen's finest (because he isn't in it, perhaps).

I thank other reviewers for explaining what this film is about. The sound (stereo, not surround) was very poor for understanding the diction and it had me searching for the subtitles which didn't exist. I gave up watching but shall try again one day when I've mustered up some patience and have read other reviews and synopses.
