is the mini/travel sized board also made of wood, like the regular version, with a place on the edge of the board to hold all the pieces?

The mini board is made of wood and is small and easy to store. However, its outer gutter does NOT hold ALL the pieces. It holds only about 22-25 of the 30 pieces. My wife and I start with 20 pieces in the gutter, and each of us holds 5 of our pieces in our hands to use first. This works OK. And the pieces can be stored in the trough and in the 16 holes easily enough when you're not playing. Hope that helps.
