Yes, rechargeable batteries CAN be used, but this thing eats ordinary batteries for fun, so they won't hold the charge for too long. I'd stick with Duracel they last a little longer and take them out if you/your child isn't going to be using the robot for a while.

Q: We've just opened our mip inserted the batteries. He did light up initially but not working. Wondering if the battery connectors are duff?

I too had the same problem. Inserted new batteries, turned MiP on, lights came on and all seemed fine but robot could not balance at all, totally no traction at all on any surface! Very disappointed child on xmas morning !!! Unit will be sent back ASAP for a replacement
