Is the laptop compartment padded such that if the bag was dropped on the laptop side, the laptop would likely be safe?

I forgot the my laptop that just barely fits was in this backpack after a vacation and leaned on the bag every which way and my laptop is perfectly fine. I did this for months without realizing and dropped it on the ground kind of hard a few times and there was no damage.
