Will this calculator be good for pre-algebra and through calculus?

Any Casio fx115 series calculator would be very good through college, and I recommend it for this reason. They can stick with this calculator through college and after when they take the PE (processional engineering) exam as this is on their list of allowed calculators. This way they will always be familiar with it and its operations.

Which type of battery is required to this calculator?

This calculator has a dual power source: a photovoltaic cell used when there is sufficient light, and a battery for use when the light level is low. The battery is a LR44 (or equivalent) button cell. You have to remove the back of the case (seven philips-head screws) to get to the battery. The recommended replacement interval is every three years. This information is on pages 14 and 16 of the "User's Guide 2 (Additional Functions)" manual that comes with the calculator. By the way, I have had mine since July 2005 and I still use it regularly.

does this product calculate interest rate functions?

It’s more of a scientific calculator than a financial one. It does not directly calculate interest rates. The BA II Plus by Texas Instruments should do what you need.
