Q: Can this be used for ice fishing?

The answer is a vague yes. It could be used to use to tell the depth where the fish are at but you really need a vexilar flasher. I've had an 8 for a couple years now and would never go without it. If you have the cash get a flasher and an a tbox and never look back.

Q: Does the entire unit attach to the side of the boat? what is the all the wire used for that i see in the photo. i want to use it on my 20 foot searay

Just the transducer attaches to the boat I keep the smart box up front ( for the power button and recharge) in a 17'
