I smell the successful beginning of an outstanding series!
Society had devolved into billions of individuals trapped in their mansions, their condiminiums, their homes, their apartments or their hovels. Trapped by fear! Trapped inside by the fear of contagion. The virus pandemic of the day. The 8 billion people living on our little blue marble was now just more than 6 billion! In only about 5 years, two billion people had caught an infection, a little cough, whatever the symptoms of the current plague, and some recovered, but most died.About the Virus Cops - a whole bureaucracy grown up around detecting the infected in the neighborhoods, sentencing them to death and throwing them into a huge metal bucket that would shoot a blaze of fire into the air, mixed with the ashes of the infected miscreant. The VC were the Gestapo of this new age. Cameras were everywhere, catching crime, or just watching. Like Big Brother.Excellent storyline, told by a master! Hard to imagine living in this world of plagues and burn boxes! Great characters! Great read!

spellbinding
This is yet another fascinating, entirely different, complex, scientifically plausible world Adair has created where biological catastrophe, abetted by the forces of evil, have created hell on earth. And a small, unlikely group of heros fight incredibly and heroically against terrible odds to save the world and humanity. As a side note, I must state that I think that burning someone alive for murder or execution is probably the most sadistic, deranged and obscene idea that ever was created in the mind of a man. i wish to god that no one of my species had ever conceived of it, much less put it into practice. In several of his novels Bobby Adair uses this to underscore the evil of the people in power. And it is terribly effective.

highly interesting
Well, I must say, this was a compelling story. I like that the author used the most recent scientific research and controversies to create a dystopian future that captivated me page by page. This novel is Highly recommended.

BRILLIANT! ENGROSSING! TERRIFYING!
I'm a longtime fan of Bobby Adair and so happy to have a new release from him. Even if you've never read him, this post-apoc view of life will capture your attention and make you put him on your fave author list. Think Covid times a hundred destroying society as we know it and one man's fight to make it all right. Wonderful hero, great character development, beautifully written and all over a must read.

Loved this book, was glued to it never wanted to stop reading it
Imagine if our pandemic went on for decades. This is kind of the world of this story. Action, conspiracy, apocalypse level story with likeable characters, pop culture references, and some humorous moments. I'm hooked on this story, and look forward to more books in the series.

2/3 writing 1/3 static
Fully 1/3 of this book is lead character/narrator introspection. I skipped over most of it and felt I really didn’t miss anything. The rest of the book was great, but what should have been development through action and dialogue was the hero character struggling with their own thoughts, which is just the worst style of writing. Every word a writer uses having a main character, particularly the narrator, describing their own thoughts, is a a moment stolen from the reader to develop their own opinion of the character and other characters they are thinking about. To me, it’s almost like watching a reality show where there is narration of what a person is thinking in therapy when they are getting no benefit from the therapy.

good story; original
I’m on to book 2. It’s a unique plot, no doubt born from our recent woos. I’m a Bobby Adair fan who devoured Slow Burn series (5 stars).

Excellent first part of a trilogy.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Having spotted the author elsewhere, I was dreading it being a zombie thing, but the premise is great and very believable. I love the main character, Noah and the supporting characters are also good. The best part for me was the pace. Knowing it was the first of 3 books, the pace allowed me to become invested in the characters without it being one 'chase after another', leaving you wanting more. Gotta wait until Jan '24 for the next instalment though. :-(

Better than I thought it would be
Much better than I thought it would be when I read the first few pages.I slowly remembered why I had enjoyed this writers previous books, not only does he tell a good story but he dies so in an engaging and readable style that keeps you engaged and entertained all the way through.I am now eagerly awaiting the next instalments of this story.
