Review: 8-Star Single-dose Grinder That Beats Baratza Encore ESP. Latest Model Has Dialer Improvements. - 1-Year Review: This is a very reliable single-dose 8-star 40mm conical burr grinder that beats the 6-star Baratza Encore ESP in extreme precision of grind-size selection, overall consistency of grind, and generally low retention. The updated model I received in the US in November 2024 has several very desirable improvements (see photo). It is a fast single dose grinder that espresso-grinds 16g of French Roast beans in ~7 seconds. It grinds at 600rpm using 150W. I suggest turning on the motor before pouring in the bean dose to minimize startup stress on the grinding components and prolong the life of the grinder. This also leads to better bi-modal coffee grind consistency. Pros: 1) The labeling of the grind-size selector-ring has been swapped so that the indicator arrow is now at a fixed location on the front body of the grinder and is very easy to see no matter what grind size is selected. The rotating ring is now labeled with numerical grind settings (see photo). In the original version it was the indicator arrow that was on the rotating ring and some grind settings could only be read from the back of the grinder. The rotating ring's dial position on the internal upper burr collar can be changed by loosening a small recessed lock-screw on the ring dial itself. This allows setting the "zero-position" calibration of the selector dial so that it can be adjusted to correctly display the minimum "0" grind clearance when the rotating burs begin to "Chirp" against each other. However the diagram bellow the indicator arrow may still at first seem confusing until you realize it is actually indicating what "clock direction" to ROTATE the selector ring. The LEFT-pointing arrow indicates turning the selector ring CLOCKWISE (dialing larger numbers) produces courser grinds vs. the RIGHT-pointing arrow indicates turning the selector ring Counter-CLOCKWISE (dialing smaller numbers) produces finer grinds. 2) The black rubber bellows now have an exterior flat matte finish rather than a glossy finish. This makes it much more cosmetically appropriate and matches well with the black matte paint of the grinder body. 3) The cap is now made of real wood rather than plastic simulated wood. 4) The 58mm diameter metal grind collector cup has a rim-lip that is a perfect fit for 58mm filter baskets and can be used as a "Blind Shaker". The collector cup is tall enough to avoid grind spillage out of the chute while grinding but you probably will still need to hold the cup a bit closer to the chute to avoid coffee grind blow-out when sharply compressing the bellows. By using the portafilter as a lid for the grind-filled collector cup, the capped cup can be used as a "Blind Shaker" to effectively distribute the bi-modal coffee grind and avoid clumping. If the upside-down capped cup is given a gentle final tap by vertically hitting the bottom of the portafilter against the counter-top tamping mat, the grinds typically end up well located in the filter basket. The portafilter will have a narrow empty border around the top of the filter basket interior wall and the grinds will be ready for final tamping. Note using a fine-wire WDT tool is no longer necessary or even recommended with "Blind Shaking". 5) The grinder included a very nice quality wooden natural bristle brush that is very useful in general cleaning of the burrs and the main portion of the chute. Hover the brush is designed such that it cannot reach deep enough into the chute to clean the internal silicon rubber grate that is located at the very top of the chute (see Cons). 6) The grinder included the needed Allen Wrenches to dismantle the burrs and adjust the grind selection ring. However it did not include the needed 2.5mm Allen Wrench to dismantle the chute for deep cleaning (see Cons). Cons: 1) The very top of the chute has an internal silicon rubber grate that decreases static cling of the grinds but as a consequence some grinds will pile up behind the grate. If not periodically cleaned, a small clump of old accumulated grinds may suddenly dislodge into your current coffee dose. It is good annual maintenance to remove the chute and burrs for inspection and deep cleaning. 2) The provided cleaning brush does not extend deep enough into the chute to reach the rubber grate. Fortunately I have a long pencil-sized soft brush that can safely reach the grate and gently dislodge the small amount of accumulated grinds. 3) The grind size selection is continuous though the selector dial does have gentle "click-stops" which serve as general position guides. Once set, the selector dial stays at that setting while grinding. However if the grinder is at all jolted while moving it on the countertop, the dial may accidentally shift to the nearest click-stop. 4) Unlike the Baratza Encore ESP, there is no "anti-popcorn" shield at the bottom of the bean hopper and occasionally the final set of beans in the dose may not automatically flow into the burrs. At the end of grinding a dose, sharply compressing the bellows while the grinder is still ON will not only flush any retained coffee grinds out of the chute, it also forces any stray beans to finally fall into the burrs and complete the full dose. 5) The grinder's red AC power-status LED is always on as long as the grinder is plugged into an AC outlet and it is therefore always consuming a very small trickle charge. This can be annoying if you don't like having a continuous red-glow "night-light" on your counter-top.
Review: I love it - Fits perfect, small, no noise, good for espresso and pour-overs. Grind seems very consistent. Good build. Can complain. A little bit of coffee can escape after using a bunch of times. I had to open it and readjust the tickers. The scale goes up to 8. For pour overs I had to dial at 8 plus like 5. So I reset the scale to make espresso around 1.5 and pour overs around 8.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ consistent grind, but retains a lot of grounds
*by C***N on May 22, 2024*

Well-built and solid feeling, the D40+ gives me very consistent fine coffee grounds, perfect for espresso. I have to take it apart and clean it out frequently. After 10 grinds (enthusiastically using the bellows to clear it each time), I removed a gram of coffee grounds from the burrs and outlet. When I am changing the grind size to dial-in my espresso shot (or switching to a different coffee bean), this amount of retention is a hassle. One of the Allen wrenches supplied for dismantling and cleaning were the wrong size. The fit & finish is otherwise good. If you don't mind pulling it apart and cleaning it every few days, this is a good, budget espresso grinder.
