However a good introduction to a fascinating subject and a useful reference
This small booklet lists all of the burhs together with the descriptions in the Burghal Hidage in both the original AngloSaxon and modern English. A brief introduction sets the scene. There are no illustrations and no commentary on what is now visible of these fortifications or of archaeological investigations at the known sites. That would have required a much lengthier volume. For this reason, the burh by burh examination is a little misleading, hence 4 stars. However a good introduction to a fascinating subject and a useful reference.

Not much in it!
Probably my own fault for not doing my research properly before buying it, but it wasn't what I expected. I had hoped it might shed some light on my Anglo-Saxon roots. Instead, it's a couple of dozen maps, one a page, showing an administrative area along the Saxon coast and saying how many hides it covered. And that's pretty much it.Maybe useful as a reference work, but will take literally 2 or 3 minutes to read, including the short intro.
