Very informative book while traveling the trail
My 13 year old loved looking up the stops we made as we followed the trail on a road trip. This book was the perfect tool for my history buff.

The great walk west
I found this book to be highly interesting, filled with old maps and guides. Pictures both old and new. It is also filled with true stories from those that took the great journey west. These people went through great trials and tribulations to find a new home, a new way of life in the great far west. Not many of us modern Americans would pack up the bare esstentials, sell the rest and walk across the great plains and through the wilderness of Wyoming and Idaho, induring the heat and dry air, the thunderstorms and the other hazards mother nature could and would throw at you simply on the promise of a better life.

Perfect present for those into pioneer days and western history
My brother bought this book for me while we were traveling across country from Ontario, Canada to Eugene, Oregon in 2001. We were in the basement underneath the St. Louis Arch Way to the West at the time. We indeed followed the Oregon trail on our cross country adventure by RV and used this book repeatedly as a guide. So when I found new friends here in Oregon from pioneer stock, I thought this book the perfect gift as a memento of our friendship. It's the perfect guide, gift and reference point.

Oregon Trail
Very fascinating. I have done the Oregon Trail - not exactly like my ancestors - but felt the trek gave me a better historical perspective about life on trail in the 1840s and 1850s and beyond. I am enjoying The Oregon Trail by William Hill...especially he photos and drawings.

Very Interesting Read
This is a very good book for those having an interest in The Oregon Trail and its history. It bridges the gap between the history of the trail and a current travel guide to trace its history.Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the trail or the general history of the area.

Great book with fuzzy B&W pictures
The author did a lot of research (as described in the book in length) traveling along OT in his jeep wagon. A good summary of general info for the beginners. The pictures and photos are inferior quality, only an experience photographer's eye can tell what they are.

An easy to read illustrated history and guide.
If you want an introductory guide to the Oregon Trail, this is it. It has four sections. Roughly half the book is devoted to illustrations following a yesterday and today theme. The other three sections are roughly all of equal length. One is devoted to a history of the trail. A second is devoted to extracts from maps, diaries and guidebooks of the time. The maps, it has to be said, are roughly one quarter the size of the original 1846 Fremont/Preuss strip maps, and are so small as to be more of historical interest than of any use (but this is a minor annoyance).. the final section is devoted to Monuments, museums and historic sites along the trail for the modern traveller.
