Let's Be Friends: A Workbook to Help Kids Learn Social Skills and Make Great Friends

Wonderful ! Daughter was bullied and afraid to make friends! This helped!
I bought this for my 2nd grader who was having a hard time with friends in 2nd grade. She as bullied and in a way where the other child did not want her to be friends with a certain girl as she wanted her all to herself. So, it was a very negative and exclusive experience for her. At the same time, my daughter was quite "fascinated" by the bully and every once in a while would come home thrilled that this girl had played with her. It was very confusing. The school was involved but it was truly "rebuilding" work that had to be done at home and I did not know where to turn. This book was simple to use in that it opened up conversations about being nice but standing up for yourself, what makes someone "cool", what kind of people do you want in your life, how do you make positive friendships. My daughter had to learn how to find the friends that were positive for her and how to be a good friend as she was afraid of attachments.I like this book a ton as I could do the exercises with her but adapt the message or "lesson" to what the needs were of my daughter at the time. This is a great book to own and to pull from.

Just what I was looking for - for a kid who just needs a little help making friends.
I ordered this for my seven-year-old son who doesn't have any serious problems, but consistently struggles with making friends. We just started, but so far I'm really pleased with it. He was also excited to start working through it because it felt like an actionable way to address a problem that others and baffles him. The lessons are short and not prescriptive or lecturing. Rather they offer simple breakdowns of the elements of friendship - starting with knowing about yourself and moving slowly into asking kids about themselves and relating to others. There are also little stories about kids dealing with different social situations, which I've found nice to inspiration for further conversations. Working through it with him is also giving me a lot of insights into the way he approaches friendship that I didn't get from his recounting of what had happened to him on the playground. We'll see if these exercises really do influence his behavior and experience, but in this early stage I'm really pleased to have a place to start that makes sense and engages him with drawing and activities.

Very practical, helpful workbook to strengthen those social skill muscles!
This book has a lot of engaging activities and practical suggestions on how to make friends. It was wonderful sitting down with my daughter and working through some of the chapters together. We discussed certain topics that she want to dive into, and it was real bonding experience. Her confidence grew. She always had me setting up play dates when she was younger. However, now that we have moved to a new area and she is older, she had to make friends on her own for the first time. This workbook really helped develop her social skills! She keeps it on her desk at home and references it on occasion. I highly recommend it.

Great book for girls
My daughter struggles with friendships and seems to go after the Queen Bee type of friends. She isn't as socially adept as some of the other girls her age and needed some guidance in what makes a good friend. Trying to instill good habits now is important. this book provides some wonderful activities that your daughter can work on alone and some that you and she can work on together. Some of the activities were a bit elementary for her (she is 10) so we just skipped those.

Great worksheets/activities.
I use this in a friendship skills course for elementary kids. It is easy to use/follow. It's structure is sensible and the flow works. We've seen improvements with the children in confidence, ability to speak about themselves, increased awareness of others and much more.

Isn't what I thought it would be
My daughter is really nice and shy. But she has a really hard time making friends because she is a little immature for her age and has a hard time picking up social cues. I thought this book would help her with ways of making friends and help with social cues in situations. This seems more like a book for the mean kids to help them be nicer so they can make friends. Or kids who already have friends. It asked a lot of question about "your friends" but my daughter doesn't really have any so she couldn't even answer them and it made her feel worse. I'll probably return it.

Each exercise/topic is easy to follow
I have a few different topics in these books by Dr. Shapiro. They are all similar in style and format. Each exercise/topic is easy to follow, relateable and to the point - it doesn't drag on too long, which is important for my ADHD son. I sent this one with him to school to use during part of his social skills time.

Good for parents, teachers, and Therapist
As a therapist, I use this book (and others in the series) as part of my therapy with children. The various worksheets are a great way to jump start a session and it provides the children and parents with something tangible to take home afterwards.

wasn't keen on this book, my Daughters really struggled to keep friends and the first few excercises it asks you to do is to list your friends and what you have in common with them ect. a bit difficult if you don't really have anyone around you and kind of reinforses how lonley shes already feeling.
