Buying the kit was a much better option than searching for the special hinge pieces that make this cube function the way it does. My son followed the instructions and put it together very quickly. He now takes it apart and puts it back together more often than using it the way it is intended to occupy him. But I'm less concerned about that than I am with his older sisters' fascination with the cube and taking it away from him. With that being said, I feel the price is more than I want to pay to make sure they each kid has one in a different color. I love the idea of legos and feel they are a great toy for learning and playing, but they seem to capitalize on that and jack up the price more than necessary. It feels like we end up paying for the "sets" and their "designs" instead of the actually plastic pieces. Each set seems to require some special "piece" that becomes "rare" and beause they are so small they get lost and then it costs almost as much to replace that piece as it does to purchase another "set". For example the special hinge in this set costs nearly $7 to replace. At least that was what my initial research indicated. And when you consider the intended purpose of this particular kit, and the type of child who will be utiliizing it - you have to hope and pray that litle hinge piece doesn't get knocked onto the floor and sucked up into the vacuum cleaner!
