Just the job for a 14" sailing dinghy
This is a great little motor. I did some calculations and a ~20lb motor was what I needed to push a 4m 75kg sailing dinghy along at a useful speed on still inland waters. I have four other outboards, including a 55lbs beast of an electric for other occasions, but I don't want a motor boat - I just want something to get me up a channel against the wind, or get me back in the evening when the wind died. Hefting the 55lb motor is like a 10kg sledgehammer. It's good, but not subtle - very hard to store in a small boat, and fit when you're out on the water. This one's perfect - extremely light, and tiny so it'll fit in a locker. It takes up less space than a decent paddle. The two blade prop also means it stores flat compared to the normal three blades. Fortunately the shaft is just long enough to submerge the affair when on the back.On full power, it'll push the boat along at about 2.5mph. This is about the same speed I can row the same boat without killing myself. On the lower power setting it'll do 1.5mph, which is actually useful at times. It also has a reverse switch, which is handy. You can spin the motor 360 degrees, but that relies on having easy access, and I have to lean over a stern locker, so flipping a switch works for me.On a dinghy, the stubby tiller and power switches aren't a bother. The motor rotation is tightened and I steer with the rudder, as you'd expect.I can easily imagine fitting this to a canoe and it performing very well. I'll have to try it one day. The extreme lightness of the motor would be spoiled with a heavy lead-acid battery in a canoe, but I've struggled to find a sensible 12V Li-Ion alternative. Now - very important. Please don't read this review and buy one without understanding motors and thrust, and especially wind and current. This won't get you out of trouble if you mess up. There's no power in reserve when used on a dinghy. It's a similar thrust to someone rowing or paddling.

low quality
forget the good reveiws. if the item had worked it would still be made of cheap plastic parts. transom mount bends out when tightening. anti kick up is just a plastic tube that drops down the shaft. the clip that holds up the motor cannot take the weight and drops down on its own. mine 2 mins into its first use, the low speed stopped. then high speed was slow, just dead weight, had to paddle. then power lights failed. shorted out my £700 battery and melted.. out at sea, now waiting to see what comes out of this mess with amazon

Excellent little motor
Great bit of kit, powers my fold-up tender nicely, super quiet. Please note the controls are all in the top part, not the handle. I might rig up a remote switch but that's just for my setup. Excellent value.

Poor after sales service
I bought this motor to use on my Mirror Dinghy to avoid rowing on non-tidal waters when the wind dropped.I would expect 2-3 knots from 20 pound thrust.Just turned in circles and useless.I contacted seller to suggest compromise-exchange this for more powerful motor(£378) and I pay the difference in cost.Jobsworth replied and ignored my suggestion.Baldly and incorrectly stated the item was advertised only suitable for a kayak. It had been used and could not be resold. This translates to"We have your money, now get lost".In my experience, companies like this rarely stay in buisness.
