Turns out the J5 does what it is supposed to but I have to convert HDMI to DP and it turns out my adapters are uni direction so it won't work. Either need a dock from USBC to DP or a bidirectional hdmi to DP.

This supplier is awesome. I thought I had an issue with the J5 and they helped me work the problem. Using it with an M1, 2020 Mac mini running the latest version of macOS. No performance or stability problems observed. The hub provides plenty of ports for my backup HDD, an additional storage SSD, and the regular connectivity of other SSDs, thumb/flash drives, and iDevices, plus reduces physical wear on the Mac's ports.
