You can only typ on it if you put anothr typwritr on it and typ on that. The Scrittor was junk. I had to rturn it. (Sorry, feeling snarky, but my review is true.)

Q: what is the ribbon for?

It is a manual typewriter. The ribbon is held in place behind the keys and contains the ink. When you press the keys, they first hit the ribbon and that puts the letters on your paper.

Q: Do I need to buy any other equipment or separate items or will I be able to start typing letters as soon as I get this?

Most likely, you'll need to buy another typewriter. Mine barely functioned, the spacing was totally erratic, the hammers struck the ribbon between the red and black areas. I sent it back and bought an old Royal (from when the company made quality machines) for $20 at a second hand store. It works perfectly.

Q: In what years was this Royal Scrittore model produced?

I have no idea, but I'm sure you can look that up yourself on the internet. I owned one of these reconditioned typewriters, and it only took about 5 minutes to decide to return it. It was awful, I had to deliberately push down hard on each key in order to get it to type on the paper. With each key press, the whole thing shook and felt like it was about to fall apart. It was impossible to type like you would on a normal typewriter or keyboard. My smaller fingers couldn't exert enough pressure on the keys--I had to type each letter with my forefingers. I ended up with an IBM electric typewriter instead. I owned a Royal manual typewriter about 55 years ago, and it was very old then, but it was heavy, and the keys all had a very smooth action. I gave it to my mother who used it to type letters to me when I was stationed in Europe. She loved it, and so did I. This one is a different story.
