Great pickaxe for digging out tree roots
This is a great pickaxe. We needed it to dig up old tree roots in the garden. We wanted something lightweight enough to be doable by someone in their 60s. This did the job. We were able to get very thick roots out in order to put in a potato patch. I highly recommend this product. It should last the rest of my life.

High quality tool. Better than expected!
This is the pick, NOT the splitting maul, as in many of the other reviews.. This is a heavy, sturdy tool. Well balanced with good weight on pick for heavy digging and chopping. Very strong handle. Good for prying out roots or rocks. The steel seems very high quality and hard. I’ve hit a few rocks and concrete. The rocks and concrete lost. Handle is well shaped for gripping.

Good Landscape/Garden Tool
We used it to help with trenching an area that was full of rocks, tree roots and mud. It dug right in, just know it has some weight to it so if like me, you don't have a lot of upper body strength, you may struggle with swinging overhead. Otherwise, it is great quality and has a sturdy look to it.

Great tool
We have had this for several months and it holds up really well, we used to get cheaper ones and they would eventually snap, the size is great the sharpness is great and it is not extremely heavy but very durable.

Fiskars Pickaxe has a great grip & good weight balance.
Fiskars Pickaxe has a really good grip & is going to be the perfect tool for the decomposed granite hillsides here. I thought at first that it might be a little short but the weight of the business end of this tool is hefty enough to get the job done. It does seem like it will be easier on my joints. Not sure about the longevity of the wonderful grip if left outside in weather. I am looking forward to taking good care of it.

solid and great for the price
I've already spent many hours of use digging through limestone to plant trees on our property and this pickaxe/hoe combo is very solid. The balance is great and is as comfortable as can be expected. For the price this is probably the best value on the market.

Excellent quality and design
I use this tool primarily when making hiking trails. I use it to loosen hard clay, dig out stumps and rocks and to some extent cut small brush at ground level. I lever fairly large rocks with it and use its leverage to pull up stumps and roots. This purchase replaces the same model that I had worn down by grinding the edge. I keep the hoe end sharp to cut roots which means I sharpen the tool before virtually every use. Eventually I run out of steel. But the Fiskars mattocks have never broken. I have bent some less expensive mattocks but never the Fiskars brand. The handle technology is impressive as well. There is far less shock transmitted to your hands and arms. The handle does not slip in your hands and the size of the tool is comfortable for me, an average size man. It is more expensive than others to purchase, but in my experience lasts longer and is less expensive in the long run if you use it a lot and easier on your body when you do use it.

Pickaxe arrived with quarter-sized chips flaked off its "rust resistant coating", and there's already hand dirt staining on the handle. I know it's just a tool meant to slam into things repeatedly, and should get dirty and chipped up... but shouldn't it arrive in brand new condition? I'll keep the pickaxe (because I need it now, and not whenever a replacement might arrive), and time will tell whether the chips lead to problems. Otherwise, it's handsome for a pickaxe. It seems well made. Obnoxious stickers along the handle came off easily. One star deducted for imperfections on a new item. Not sure whether the fiskar factory or the amazon warehouse caused them.
