Thank You!!** A: The shortest step is about 6 inches. The height increases from there. I installed the first step at the beginning of the bottom board and the third step at the end of the board. I did not use the other two steps because I slid it under the coffee table so that the midsize step was level with the picture window so that the cat could look outside. Works beautifully! **Q: I have several small dogs, two of them short legs (daschunds), does anyone use these stairs for their dogs? How well do they work? Thanks in advance!** A: I think these would be fine for a daschund. I bought them for my cats (15 pounds each), one very arthritic and they work well with his limited range of motion. My 40 pound cattle dog also uses them sometimes and they seem to hold up just fine. **Q: How wide are the steps?** A: The steps are 17" wide by 6.5" deep. I actually bought this for my son's dog, a Cavalier King Charles spaniel, to be able to get up and down from his bed. It is sturdy and works perfectly for this use. **Q: Do you think this step ladder would be the height of two average mattresses and a bed frame? My cat has two legs so she can’t climb onto my bed.** A: I think it would work. My bed is a platform with drawers, a slim box spring (9”) and a pillow top mattress (16”). All together it runs about 36” high and these steps bring my boys near to the top. They still have a very small “step” to get up to the top, maybe 4” or so, but it’s less than the distance of the other steps.
