George Gershwin -- Three Preludes: Piano Solos (Alfred Masterwork Edition)

When I first received this sheet music (Gershwin's Three Preludes) I immediately noticed terrible ink blotches that actually obscure some notes. I arranged for an even exchange. A few days later the replacement copy arrived and it's just as bad, and on the same pages! See them side-by-side in my photos. The pages that aren't damaged are crisp and clear, but I'm not sure I can work around the ink spots. :(

This is an Alfred Masterwork edition, edited by Maurice Hinson. There are a couple of other versions of this set of piano works, but Alfred's edition has included several very subtle additions to the score's mark-up that add to the precision and mastery of these 100% Gershwin scores.The scores include: Prelude I (1927) Prelude II (Blue Lullaby) (1927) Prelude III (Spanish Prelude)... no fragments...The print is large enough (not too large) and very acute to allow all the mark-up to be easily legible.There is a very informative foreword, including a very important portion, 'Performing Gershwin's Piano Pieces'. As a pianist, you will appreciate the fingerings, pedal indications, and metronome marks, which are all editorial from various sources and which are listed in the 'About the Music' section.A thorough student of Gershwin will still want a copy of Alicia Zizzo's, 'The Complete Gershwin Preludes for Piano' for very subtle differences and for some additional fragments.Listen to acclaimed musicians playing these pieces to work out your own interpretations after mastering the techniques for these three beautiful scores.

The three preludes are quite fun to play. Perhaps the book is expensive for such short pieces, but the transcriptions are good all the same.

I love it!

As an intermediate piano student, I struggle with contemporary, classic music. These Gershwin preludes are a challenge that stretch my capabilities but are within reach. Mastering the rhythm helps my technique. This edition is easy to read, too.

I keep this as well as a hard copy for study.

We needed this for a state competition. Although we only needed one of the pieces our daughter now wants to learn all of them!

The music speaks speaks for itself....absolutely Gershwin and a lovely compilation and example of the genius of the man. Definately reccomend it to anyone who loves jazz and classical. It was delivered to me in 3 days. Just need the time to learn it now for sure, but the practice is rewarding as you work out the voicings.
