Truly original black comedy with great cast
It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed since Fargo first appeared, fully establishing the Coen Brothers as innovative filmmakers coming on the heels of Blood Simple and Raising Arizona. Having seen the movie several times, it continues to be a fresh, hilarious 98 minutes of black comedy – a perfect combination of memorable characters brought together in a story with its relatively little dialogue frequently punctuated with “you betcha’s” and “yaa’s”. The performances are superb, topped by Frances McDormand’s Oscar winning role as the pregnant police chief, Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare as the inept kidnappers and William H. Macy as the car salesman whose life builds one problem on top of another, but the whole cast blend perfectly together to create a highly entertaining, sometimes brutal, tale. The film also succeeds visually, with the bleak, snow covered North Dakota landscape perfectly photographed, with this BluRay presentation capturing its sharp, bright images. For anyone enjoying quirky tales start here, though it's hard to imagine that there are still those unaware of Coen Brothers’ movies.

Satire but Dark. Really worth the watch. So much Subtle Humour. Very Clever
Frances McDormand plays the straight face police star. With an absurd plot that goes wildly haywire. However all the way through it is tinged with dark humour. Satire at its best. Everything is exaggerated. It is impossible to take this as a serious hostage movie. Brilliantly put together and shot in the most deadpan style. Vast tracts of nothingness. The clues come from chartacterless zombies (intentionally). The 2 hookers statements (to die for). How to get rid of a body without it being recognised. Its an intriguing movie, but it should make you smile. Frances is brilliant as are the rest of the supporting cast. 7 month pregnant cop. I dont like blood and gore but you tend to overlook it because the film is so clever. Definitely worth a watch. Highly Recommended

A bit of a mixed bag
I started to watch this and then got a bit borned initially, the beginning where the husband arranges everything is a bit mundane I think. I whizzed through the rest of the film not expecting it to improve but it did. I went back to 16 minutes in, when the action started, and from there it was a very good movie. There were still bits that I went through because they were a bit slow and lame, I personally would have cut them had I been Editor. When Frances McDormand, who I have never seen in a movie before, came on screen everything for the better. I loved her in this, she pretty much carried the film single handedly in what was a truly talented performance. Her portrayal of the heavily pregnant intuitive police officer was magnificent, further enhanced by a very small amount of tounge-in-cheek comedy which was so subtle and effective.Honestly, I was going to give this 2 stars before she turned up and now it's a four, that's the difference she made. The gory scenes again are well done and pretty realistic, amount of blood etc. so they added rather than detracted from things.I've got to say this film surprised me. I really liked it in the end, and even though I skipped over parts, I can honestly say I hightly recommend it.

Good? - You Betcha!
A very entertaining black comedy, this follows a seemingly ordinary car salesman who has a debt problem and hatches a plot to solve it. Naturally, things don't go according to plan...Set in a wintery Minnesota, the landscapes are large, bleak and cold, with some interesting camerawork emphasising this. There are some great characters, particularly Marge the cop, hapless Jerry and the two hitmen. The dialogue and accents are apparently reflective of the area, with a lot of "Ya, You Betcha and Jeez" in almost Scandinavian accents.Marge's interview with the girls was particularly amusing, describing the guys as "funny looking".The blu-ray picture quality didn't strike me as anything brilliant and the sound is low-key anyway, so nothing special there. I'd still take the blu-ray over the DVD though.Definitely a very watchable film, with many moments of calm, lots of amusing dialogue and some almost cartoon-like violence.

OK but overrated
Entertaining but thought the reputation of the film was quite overblown. One for Buscemi fans.
