Murakami...enough said!
I absolutely love those Vintage Minis series. What a wonderful way to introduce us to some of the greatest writers of old and new, as well as giving us a glimpse of their work and style.I am obviously very familiar with Haruki Murukami, and have read many of his books. In fact, this book consisted of 5 short stories, and I had already read one of them in another short story collection of his. In true Murukami style, he draws you into different worlds, with characters that are always somewhat...odd. Not all the stories are my cup of tea, but somehow, he succeeds in drawing me in anyway. I always want to know what happens in the end, and why it happened that way. He leaves you with an urge to sit and discuss and think, and I love that.Definitely worth reading, and this whole series of Vintage Minis make for some very nice gifts!

A Short collection with too much from other collections
If you are new to Murakami, short stories are not his métier. The few in Desire are fairly good. If you have read enough Murakami you will recognize that several of the few short stories here have been published in other collections. For those who notice such things this Vintage Mini is a nice little book, easy to carry and for the uninitiated a nice sampler of what Murakami has done better elsewhere. The Vintage Minis are a series of small editions each by a different writer and each with a one-word tile that serves as the theme for the collection. I suspect no title in Desire was written just for this book.Desire includes five stories that give variations on the title theme. present. The Second Bakery Attack: A couple execute an out of the blue robbery because - something or anotherOn Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful Spring Morning: A wistful and near universal recollectionBirthday Girl: A waitress in a restaurant spends her birthday at work and has a small experience with its strange, reclusive ownerSamsa in Love: Kafka’s The Metamorphosis turned around.A Folklore for My Generation; A Pre-History of Late Stage Capitalism: A first person’s recollection of a friend’s first and true loveI am a fan of Murakami. My intention is to read his books in some kind of order. He can do better than this.

Caveat Emptor - This is a rehash
Bought this with no knowledge of what it was, because it was Murakami, and that’s what fans do. Should have researched it a bit more as it is a collection of short stories published elsewhere. If you already have read Murakami extensively the chances are you read everything in this collection:“The Second Bakery Attack”“On Seeing the 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning”“Birthday Girl”“Samsa in Love”“A Folklore for My Generation: A Prehistory of Late-Stage Capitalism”Nice collection, but not worth buying if you already have these in other formats.

Three mediocre stories and two are available in other volumes
There are only 3 stories in here, and two of them are available in Men Without Women (which is great). Don't buy this one.

I was really disappointed that I couldn't get it
It came within a reasonable time. I was really disappointed that I couldn't get it, up Amazon tracked a copy down for. It was brand new and an excellent read. So good that I sent it to my Dad.

Poignant little nuggets
Poignant little nuggets on the long crooked path of grappling with human desire. I think the stories helped me somehow. I feel sad and slightly more at peace with my restless heart. Worth a read.
