James Clavell was a masterful storyteller. This book is a page-turner, full of intriguing detail. While his description is artful & tantalizing, his plot is clear, well crafted & leaves you thirsting for more. The characters come to life & their interaction pulls us into an exotic history & drama. The book far over shadows the film.

Couldn't stop reading. Every part of this book so vivid. Really enjoyed learning about the ways of Japanese people back in time and also about those they call Barbarians. So interesting.

Every single page was absorbing. The history and culture of Japan overwhelmingly clarified. What a wonderful story. Marvelous characters.. Fantastic.

James Clavells Shogun is captivating. Rich characters, beautiful settings and unpredictable story lines. This is my second time reading and it was an even better experience this time. Must read.

I loved this book, and would have given it 5 stars, but eventually was so put off by the vulgarity that I marked it down. Nevertheless, I do think the book is really well done and should be admired for its great qualities. Worldbuilding and characters are its best qualities. That, and the non-stop action that won't let you rest. I recommend it (with caution about language) to everyoone.
