Raspberry Pi5 8GB

Listen. I bought this Raspberry Pi to run a retro game emulator, and now it’s running my home security system, controlling my smart lights, tracking the ISS, and occasionally telling me the weather like it’s my butler. It’s like having a roommate who’s small, silent, and actually contributes something to the household.Setup was suspiciously easy—like, am I in a simulation easy. I kept waiting for something to go wrong, but it just… worked. Who does that? Definitely not my printer.Also, I now have an excuse to say things like “I SSH’ed into it this morning” which makes me sound competent and mysterious at the same time. Is it a computer? Is it a lifestyle? Is it slowly taking over my life in a deeply satisfying way? Yes.Highly recommend—just don’t let it unionize with your smart toaster

I put one of these in an embedded application, and what can I say - it works great. It does however almost certainly need a heat sink... even just connecting it and using it on a desk to set it up it would random shut off or lock up. With a heat sink, no problem. There are multiple chips that get hot, so I used a passive that covers the entire board, but it's quite likely that just small stick-ons might be fine. Mine's emulation a pdp-10 (PiDP-10 kit) so is running continuously at about 160% CPU (load avg 1.6). The heat sink wasn't even a perfect fit, and won't cleanly contact all packages, but is still sufficient. It's been running continuously for about 5 days now. Pretty neat. The 8GB RAM lets Linux keep much of the storage (the parts actually used) resident, opportunistically cached even when not in active use (or open).Plan for a heat sink, or two small sticky ones, and a 5V 5A USB-C supply. The HDMI is micro-HDMI, so if you plan to use a display make sure to get a cable for that as well (micro-HDMI to regular HDMI if that's what your display input is).

The Pi 5 is a noticeable leap forward. Everything runs faster — from boot time to heavier workloads like emulation or running a full desktop. The 8GB of RAM gives a lot more breathing room for multitasking. I’ve paired it with active cooling, and temps stay in check. If you’ve used earlier models, this one feels like a real desktop replacement in comparison. Definitely worth it if you’re upgrading.

I just upgraded from a Raspberry Pi 4 to the new Raspberry Pi 5, and I’m genuinely impressed. Swapping out the boot disk was quick and painless—I had it up and running in no time. The performance difference was immediately noticeable. Everything feels faster and more responsive, especially under heavier workloads. If you're on the fence about upgrading, I’d say it’s definitely worth it. Solid improvement all around.

It's running fast and I use it for home automation. No issue and use almost every day

works just like i thought it would, not supper expensive… it gots perfect in its casing I made for it, supper easy to manage at home, it came with instructions, the size is perfect for a 3d CASE , it’s strong in quality!

It's the latest iteration of the pi we love. The pro's 2 hdmi ports. The cons, they are the mini ports, so you need adapters, or get a case that has a board to convert to full size.Oh, and its expensive. I know that everything has gone up in price, and it's more advance. It just seems they've gone a long way from the cheap in expensive rpi that you could get for $25 and moved into a new world of forget the price, we can charge what we want for the product.

What can I say? It is an awesome bit of tech.
