The heat retention of the scuttle is average. I would recommend pre-heating the bowl itself, then refilling again with hot water once the bowl is warmed so you don’t lose too much initial heat into the cool ceramic. It has a nice large handle for holding which is good as it can initially be too hot to hold in the palm of you hand like a typical bowl. The finish and the overall appearance is nice. The cork plug isn’t ideal. It absorbs water and becomes softer so you have to be careful not to press it too far in when wet. It also develops a permanent indentation and will inevitably wear out quickly. A rubber stopper would have been a much better choice. The bowl is kind of deep and V shaped which works but isn’t ideal. There isn’t a lot of surface area on the bottom of the bowl so the lather mainly gets built and pushed up on the sides and along the edge, constantly having to be pushed back down. That happens with all bowls to some extent but is exaggerated with this bowl shape.
