I like the premise of the book - to really understand ...
I like the premise of the book - to really understand God in a deeper way by learning His names and what they mean. I have to be honest: this book has both encouraged me and challenged me. It has encouraged me in the sense that as I learn about who God is and see Him revealed in scripture in each specific trait (i.e. provider, creator, the God who sees, etc). I begin to reflect on and notice when He has revealed and is revealing Himself to me in my own life. It's really amazing. It has impacted how I live and how I pray. My faith has increased and I am quicker to turn to God when things in my life start going awry, with a greater level of trust and expectation, rather than the questioning of my faith or being angry at God. The challenging part for me was that in learning about aspects of God I tried to dismiss or justify in the past, I had to be confronted with the fact that God does not need me to justify or explain His actions or what appears to be the lack thereof. I've been challenged to accept that there are bad things that God allows to happen and that ultimately they all work together for a wiser, greater plan - even when people hate or blame God for it, He doesn't just change to accommodate us. So I've been pushed to study these concepts - of evil and suffering and God's role in it - in greater depth - and I continue to be both challenged by it all while feeling my faith being strengthened (ironically enough). The reason I gave it 4 and not 5 stars (I would have given 4.5 if it were possible) is just that I found a few of the chapters hard to follow - well, more like, I didn't always understand the author's reason for expressing certain points as they relate to a particular name of God. In this book, one name might be covered for 3 or 4 devotionals. And in one or two of those days, sometimes, I walk away unsure of how to apply what she's written to my life. But the good thing is that in one or two of those days there is always something very personal and practical that I do walk away with. So it's important to keep reading even if a lesson or two seems not applicable or personally meaningful for you.

A life changing study.
"Lord I Want to Know You" is a devotional Study of the Biblical names of God. It is also suitable for group study which is how I am using it. I have led the study once before and it is indeed a life changing study. This summer I will be including the teenage children and grand children of those attending as it is appropriate and helpful for both adults and teens as we all travel together on this journey called life.Precept Ministries can always be counted on to produce life changing studies because they are inductive studies based upon the Word of God and as such allow students and leaders alike to "plumb" the depths of Bible Truth and own those truths so as to properly apply them in their lives. As the author, Kay Arthur, states in the introduction; "So much of our confusion, our pain, our indecision, and our wrong decisions come because we do not know God. We may know about Him--but do we know what God says about Himself? Do we know for ourselves who He really is and, therefore, how He conducts Himself in the affairs of mankind?"She goes on to state: "But with 'Lord I want to Know You' all that will change. When you know God more fully by studying His names - Creator, Healer, Protector, Provider, and many others--you'll gain power to stand strong. You'll find strength for times of trial, comfort for pain, provision for your soul's deepest needs. And your walk with God will be transformed."In biblical times a persons character was revealed in his name. This study examines God's character as revealed through fifteen names used to describe Him in the Bible. Written in a practical workbook format, this study guide on the names of God will bless you as it involves you in the learning process. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter help students to review and retain the material covered. You will be blessed as you deepen your knowledge and understanding of the Bible and learn to trust God as He proclaims His name and makes all His goodness pass before you (Exodus 33:19).

A book that will truly bring you closer to God
This book has 17 chapters in it an is structured in a way that you could do it with a small group or individually over 42 days or even faster at your own pace. I went through the book on my own, at my own pace, and managed to complete the book in about 10-12 days. Each day is there is a small amount to read and some questions to answer. If you did it in 42 days, it would probably be about 7 to 15 minutes of work each day, so it is quite do-able even if you wanted to do 2 or 3 days at a time.As for the content of the book, it is wonderful. Kay Arthur goes through 14 different Names of God, each one revealing an aspect of the true nature of God. As I read through the bible it became apparent how important God's "Name" was to Him and others. A name carries a specific weight. So I knew that by learning more indepthly about the Names of God and how they developed that it would lead me to a greater understanding of God and a closer relationship with Him - and I have not been disappointed. This book is wonderful. It was recommended to me by a friend who did this as a group study back in the 80's, so the book has been around for a while. I have referrence this book many times since completeing it, even sharing the infromation at bible studies to the amasement of others. It is a wonderful book and I would highly recommend this book to anyone, especially those who would like a deeper understanding of God and a closer relationship with Him.Kay Arthur also referrenced a book called "Names of God" by Nathan Stone, originally written in 1944, in this book. After finishing this book I read Stone's book and it is no doubt where she found a lot of her information for "Lord, I want to know you". I would recommend starting with Kay Arthur's book as it is a much easier read, but Stone's book is also great as a follow-up.Happy reading!

Great Insight
There's so much depth to the name of the Lord. This book helps you to discover that 'God' doesn't just mean one thing. Different contexts portray God in different lights and this book helps to unveil how He meets your needs on so many different levels. If you want to know God as more than 'The Father', definitely worth picking it up. It's a great devotional style that makes it easy to read through a little bit every day.
