THE Belle of Broadway

Review of the Sony Choice Collection DVD MOD, R0 NTSC. I believe this is the only silent film in this large range of DVDs from Sony.I was very pleasantly surprised when I put this one on, it is an excellent print, largely free of speckles and scratches and with lovely detail, bright clarity and an excellent greyscale. The picture really pops off the screen. The detail on the period costumes is clear, you can even see what the pictures are hanging on the walls! I can only assume this was restored in some form or someone had a largely unused print. The only drawback here is that it is obvious some frames have been cut as there are periodic micro jumps in the action.The film itself is just amusing and mildly heart warming fluff. Faded actresses friend takes on her role, fights off her ageing suitors and helps with a reunion. The actress in question is good old Betty Compson and it's a treat to see her doing her stuff on such a high quality print.Overall this is a curiosity, a somewhat obscure film but delivered in such a great print. A good late night film and it's always nice to watch Betty Compson.
