Very Happy!
Before I bought this book I was having trouble learning the Korean alphabet and understanding how the Korean language works. Although, it has only been a short time, I am now able recognize most of the sounds in the Korean alphabet without having to keep checking. I recognize some words at first glance and have seen my comprehension in reading and listening improve. I find myself remembering new words more easily.

Felt like this was perfect for my 5 year old
Felt like this was perfect for my 5 year old. I think it would work well for even up to 8-10 year olds. (I am a 3rd grade teacher as well).

So you want to read Korean?
I feel bad that this book has no reviews yet. Sadly, this wasn't the first book I purchased to learn Korean. I think this might have been the 3rd or 4th book. Hopefully, you will be smarter and make it your first. A lot of the other learn Korean books seem to be written by high level academics or linguists trying to impress their friends. This book is simple. It is geared toward children - which might be why I found it more appealing. Initially I thought the book had a CD, but it doesn't. If I was going to give it less than 5 stars it would be for that reason. Well, that and it's a tad oversized so it isn't something you can discreetly study on the subway. This is the only book that included an alphabet song instead of some stupid table with romanizations or an in depth explanation of the complete genius of the man that decided to make the language accessible to the masses. No discussions about aspirated letters/tongue placements. None. They use words that you are already familiar with to aid you as you try to pinpoint the proper sound. After the first hour of working with this book I was able to read and order galbi (type of Korean BBQ) from a menu. I was seriously stunned. Especially after so many false starts with learning the language. After that - I sort of dropped the learning the language thing. SHORT ATTENTION SPAN.I have returned to this book after a break and I still think it is awesome. I think you can easily complete the book in about 3-6 hours of study. There are lots of exercises to reinforce what you've learned. I don't think the words you learn in the book are words you are going to use on a daily basis - singer, morning, ring, face, professor, stamp, turtle - so this book is best suited to reading/mastering the alphabet (which is what it says in the introduction). To learn useful words I recommend a content dictionary. I bought Korean picture dictionary by Kang Hyoun-hwa it comes with 2 MP3 CD's (the CD's have the words both in English and Korean so you can listen to it on your ipod without having the book in front of you which is a definite bonus.)I have also picked up the second book in the series (which comes with a CD) and I'll probably start that next week/this weekend or as time permits. So if you are entirely new to Korean - I recommend this book, a picture content dictionary and a Korean boyfriend - if you can swing it.
