Natures eternal food
Let’s get the obvious out of the way. Since it was invented fruitcake has been the subject of every joke imaginable, it is the ultimate gag gift and it has been said that archeologists have discovered fruitcakes that used to be the favorite food of the dinosaurs.NOW LETS DIVE INNow that we have that out of the way, millions of people buy fruitcake every year and just as many millions love to eat it, especially around the Christmas holidays. There are fruitcakes that are ultra gourmet creations and there are ones that are truly atrocious. What in the world makes this one worth almost fifty bucks? Well to start with that, I used to trek to the tip of a mountain in northern California in the 1970’s to a monastery that opened their door to the public for a few days each year to sell their handmade fruitcakes that the monks worked on for months. If you converted what they cost back then to today’s USD they would cost about $800 bucks. So I guess this one isn’t so bad after all. The tin is a collectors item and even if it was empty it would make a fantastic gift to a military family or veteran. Inside it is filled to the top with a very heavy and ornate tasty creation covered in plastic wrap.TASTENot all fruitcake tastes the same and how am I to tell you if you will like it. To me it is moist and flavorful but so is an orange. Don’t be shy. Just go for it and if it’s not on your favorites list just don’t get it again.OBSERVATIONSI was slightly concerned that the plastic wrap appeared to have a tiny hole in it which leaked a little onto the paper liner inside. Spoilage is always a concern but fruitcake has a long shelf life. But more worrisome is always the prospect that a food item has been tampered with. I didn’t deduct anything for this because it is a handmade product and perhaps someone was careless but still. My other concern is almost that nowhere on the product itself was a list of ingredients, especially with something like this that has nuts and other things that some may have allergies to. I don’t have any allergies but I do like to know what’s in what I eat. I suppose with fruitcake it is such a decadent food item that words like gluten or calories or anything else is thrown out the window for the sake of having a treat. Now having said that I pulled the outer cardboard out of the trash and there it was, but easy to miss. Suggest that maybe they consider printing it on the back side of the round paper topper inside the tin.YES NO MAYBEI believe in small businesses and I would have liked to know more about this company and why they make fruitcake, certainly a controversial food item. I did my own homework and I’m convinced that they deserve to be given some leeway when reviewing them. I like the taste, so that’s on me, my vote is I like it.

Not the fruit cake you're used to....
I was one of those outlier kids growing up who during the holidays always made a mad dash to the fruit cake at events and parties. It has always been a favorite of mine for almost five decades now and I've had it in all types of variations from homemade to local bakeries to the mass produced kind that nobody would touch.....except for me.When I say this is a top grade fruit cake, I mean just that. It is absolutely delicious while retaining everything that makes a great fruit cake great. Collin Street Bakery and Claxton are my two favorite mail order fruit cake makers. If you're used to buying lesser brands or picking up whatever you can find as an after thought to slap on your holiday/party table, you are doing yourself a great disservice by not picking up a fruit cake from either bakery and really experiencing what a good fruit cake can deliver. The candied fruit is delicious and well balanced. The cake itself is dense and moist. The Pecans add such a nice crunch and texture and the glaze just pulls it all together. When I was a kid, I would eat it straight up or with a glass of milk. As I've gotten older, I now enjoy it with a cup of english tea with milk and a touch of sweetener. To really send this to the next level, heat it up in the microwave for 15-20 seconds and it just goes to an 11!This is an incredibly decadent, rich, savory, sweet delicious treat and the calories and sugar back that up. One serving is all you need and just savor each bite and look forward to the next piece. An added bonus is a beautiful tin for the US military and veterans which makes for a perfect gift.....even to yourself! This is as good as mail order bakery fruit cake gets bar none.

Great fruit cake in a collectable tin that supports our Troops
Full disclosure, I was given this item as part of Amazon's Vine program in exchange for an honest review, positive or negative. This is a pretty good fruit cake. I would give in 8.5 out of 10. It is better than a 4-star rating, but not quite a 5-star rating out of 5. If you like pecans, you will probably give it a 10. The top and inside is filled with so many that you can't taste the candied fruit. It is basically pecans with a little cake around it. Other than too many nuts, it is great. I wish they had more candied fruit and fewer nuts. Then it would be perfect. If someone is allergic to nuts, don't open it within a 2 block radius of them without an EpiPen!Before you open it, make sure you have something to wash your hands with. This thing is VERY sticky. It is wrapped it plastic inside the metal tin. Even the outside of the plastic was sticky. If you are planning on sending it to a loved one serving in the military, send them some wet wipes along with the fruit cake. They will appreciate it.Speaking of the Troops, the fruit cake comes in a "collectable tin" commemorating the Troops. According to their website. They released a version that did not include all branches of the military, yet they received a ton of support for it- more than they were expecting. So they re-released this new version with all the branches listed. They make donations to the Wounded Warrior Project and other military related projects. 10% of the sales of these fruitcakes go to those charities, though it is unclear if that included the sales through Amazon.

Usually the best fruitcake but
Usually this is the best fruit cake but for some reason this fruit cake wasn't very fresh the nuts tasted stale. I hate giving a less than 5 star review because I know it is usually a great product but this one was a let down.
