Q: What is the actual diameter of the pole? It's either 1.5" or 2". It's helpful to know so we can buy correct base. The answer of 5" doesn't make sense.

The diameter is 1.48” I see that in another question someone answered 5”, but they seem to mean the whole circle dimension (which is not needed for the base). So the diameter is 1.48” (just measured)

Q: What type of base would i need to purchase for this to sit by itself? (Not inside a table)

I use a metal base stand for this type of umbrella. They do sell plastic base stands that you can fill with sand but I have never had any issues with my umbrellas blowing over.

Q: Does it come with a cover?

No it does not come with a cover

Q: Could you cut off a section at the bottom to shorten it slightly?

I would think so with a hack saw.
