Low volume yes but I could hear it but visual reference worked better I started with the good wire to test and practice with then went to know bad wire I found I had to turn sensitivity down to keep it from falseing or ghost signal at first it was telling me my break was 75 ft from source but by turning it down I found the corroded break 6 ft from source easy repair better than tearing out 200 ft of 100amp service and digging new trench and replacing . Total cost to return power to cabins 130. Dollars plus 1 day labor included trip to hardware store . And I like the rechargeable 9volt batteries that came with it .the instructions were very understandable . A GOOD GROUND IS REQUIRED. I found the one they supply isn't even a decent tooth pick I used the ground for the source supplier

Tone is very low and cannot be adjusted

I only used it a couple times for tracing wires inside a house.It works really well and I love the fact that it can be connected to live wires as well.
