I bought the 16" size and I expected more for the cost ($45 when I purchased it). My biggest complaint is with the construction and materials. The felt on the pieces is very thin and on many of the pieces was not centered. That caused it to drag the board and not feel smooth. The board also did not feel very solid.Finally, the storage area for the pieces was a hard(ish) material so the pieces rattled slightly.It did look nice and everything lined up so the appearance was good. It came with 2 queens which is also nice.Overall, not a great value, in my opinion.

well made but a little over priced

There are awesome things as a whole that I really really appreciate about this board. Let's get started:I picked out this particular board - No. 4 - for the size. While not tournament standard it is a nicer, more versatile sized board for around the house or when we visit friends and family.I also love the fact this board is numbered and lettered.My husband is a member on a forum where they hold the occasional chess game between interested members and this set will make it easier for him to participate because he won't have anything to look up plus it gives him the opportunity to memorize the squares at his own pace. (He's new to chess)The board is actual wood, and fairly well finished at that. It's heavier and extremely attractive in person. There's a minor crack on a portion of one of the squares on the board I received but you can't feel it and it doesn't hamper play. Rather, I think it adds to the real wood aspect of the board and is a mark of character.The hinge clasps that are used to close the board up for storing are thinner and over time will fail, however I DON'T feel they can be replaced with heavier/larger clasps without taking away from the classier atmosphere the board as it stands exudes. If and when they fail I'll simply replace with a similar clasp - this is not something that concerns me at all.The piece's are machine finished but still very well done and attractive.Honestly, I was so thrilled upon receipt because of how much nicer this board is to one I own that was more expensive. For the price this exceeded all my expectations.There are a couple points that detract some from this - I don't particularly like the felt portion where you store the pieces is what the board sets upon when open. However, fixing that is s likely to drive the price up and take it out of the realm of "travel" so it truly becomes a non-issue.This isn't perfect for travel, you will want to buy some type of travel case if you plan on taking this out very much - nothing of that sort is included here and like my other nitpicking if a case was included it would drive the price up.This board and the pieces are perfect for this price - and much more than I expected.As a result of all of the above I do give this board 5 out of 5 stars for the Number 4 set I received.Yes, I absolutely recommend! I'd buy this in a heartbeat!For a casual player who wants a chess set that can be easily stored when not in use and can occasionally travel this is the perfect chess set. Very very giftable. Anyone should be thrilled with this set.PS. The photo I took looking directly down onto the board itself shows the center join point looking a bit open, but that's because the table I have it set on for the photo isn't very flat... Nothing to do with the board itself.
